Grade or Class:
1st Grade

Prior Knowledge:
Some experience with cutting, some experience with watercolor and oil pastel.

Central Focus/Big Idea:

Change / Analogous Colors / Wax Resist

Learning Segment Overview: Brie y describe eac

Day 1: Intro/ Motivation/Engage/Research: Introduce lesson on leaves, play story read aloud of
“Leif and the Fall,” (6 min) recap video/talk about why leaves change, begin working on project –
Have students draw, with pencil, stem of leaf, then “ ngers” around the stem, creating a leaf
shape. Then students will trace over pencil with sharpie, and then cut out leaf shape.
Time needed: 45 min

Day 2: Instruction process/Procedure/Explore/Guided Practice: Review what we have done so

far, continue powerpoint, focusing on WAX-RESIST method. Introduce Tony Stubbing (wax-
resist artist) show example of his work. Then discuss PATTERN, and introduce next step in
project – OIL PASTEL. Then, students will create patterns in the “sections” of leaf with oil pastel.
Time needed: 45 min

Day 3: Present/ Respond and/or connect/present: Finish powerpoint by discussing

Academic Language Demands, as applicable

1. Language Function
a. Students will be able to create a two dimensional work of art using a wax resist
method.
2. Vocabulary
a. Change, Seasons, Analogous Colors, Wax-Resist
3. Discourse
a. I will show my students an example of Tony Stubbing’s work. I will read a book about changing
seasons.
4. Practice
a. I will put Vocab words on the board, and review vocab throughout instruction, Video read aloud will also help
students understand vocab.

Key Materials I will be using my powerpoint lesson plan full of examples, standards, and vocabulary. We will be
paper, sharpie, oil pastel, and watercolor to create the leaves. I will show an example of Tony Stubbing’s work, as well
as a read aloud video about the book “Lief and the Fall.”

Theory/Theorists/Research Connections: State the theory/theorists whose thinking

These are the two that you referenced in your Instructional Strategies and Learning Task
According to the Studio Habits of Mind, students can stretch and explore their understanding of
art by discovering new techniques to create art. This habit inspired this lesson plan because I
want my students to not only further their skills by exploring new elements of art, but I also want
them to discover new techniques of art that they do not typically see.

Accommodations Universal Design for Learning used in this art lesson.

• Representation: Clari cation on vocabulary/concepts, multiple representation of different
types of learners in the powerpoint/video, giving background information on wax resist
method.
• Engagement: Giving students chance to “win” what color they will be using, discussing
vocabulary/key terms throughout instruction
• Expression: Using multiple resources to teach the lesson (powerpoint, videos, examples),
keep them goal oriented by helping them plan ahead.
• Individual student with special needs: Providing accommodations and having things more
structured. Having teacher work one on one with them if neede
