I. BASIC REPORTED SPEECH.


EXERCISE 1: Put into the reported speech: (Câu tường thuật)
1. Tom said “I want to buy a pocket calculator for my father”

 Tom said he wantd to buy a pocket calculator for his father


2. She said “I once spent a summer in this village”

 She said she had once spent a summer in that village


3. The nurse said “The patient in this room didn’t obey your orders, Doctor”

 The nurse said to the doctor that the patient in that room didn’t obey his obey
4. They said to me “You taught us English last year”

 The said to me that I had taught them last year


5. Mr.Brown said “Our trip cost us two thousand dollars” He said to her “ I can’t find my
hat anywhere in this room”
 Mr.Brown said that the trip had cost them two thousand dollars
6. My father said to them “My secretary is going to finish this job”

 My father told them his secretary was going to finish that job
7. They said “We can’t meet you here either today or tomorrow”

 They told me they couldn’t meet me there either today or the following day
EXERCISE 2: Change to the reported speech: (Yes/No - Question)
1. She said “Did the mechanic finish repairing your car?”
 She asked if the mechanis had finished repairing my car
2. I asked my friend “Was anyone hurt in the car accident last month?”
 I asked my friends if anyone had been to hurt in the car accident the month before
3. He said to her “Have you been to town today?”
 He asked her if she had been to town that day
4. Paul said “Can you swim, Mary?”
 Paul asked Mary if could she swim
5. She asked her son “Do you know which is the cup you used?”

1. Mr. Smith said “Where are you going on your vacation this year?”

 Mr. Smith asked where I was going on my vacation this year


2. She said “Why has David been looking so miserable lately?”

 She asked why David had been looking so miserable lately


3. She asked me “How old are you now?”

 She asked me how old I was then


4. John said “How long does it take you to get to London, Mary?”

 John asked Mary how long it took you to get to London


5. The policeman asked the little girl “What’s your name?”

 The policeman asked the litter girl what her name was
6. Mr. Green said to his secretary “Who did you talk to a few minutes ago”

 Mr. Green asked his secretary who she had talked to a few minutes before
7. He said “Where can I find her in this town?”

 He asked me where he could find her in that town


8. Helen said “What did you say, Jack?”

 Helen asked Jack what he said that

C. REPORTED SPEECH WITH GERUND
EXERCISE 1. Rewrite the following sentences with Gerund
1. “Shall we go for a swim now?” she said to us.
