Module 1 – assignment

The first assignment includes a written report (paper). The assignment involves answering the
questions given using relevant parts of the course literature. Maximum amount of text is 1500
words. The number of words should be printed on the front page. The assignment is to
answers three essay questions in which you are expected to use the course literature and your
own thoughts and reflections to address the following questions:
Q1) How can the concept of CSR be defined? Develop a broad and theoretical knowledge of
course concepts.

Q2) Describe and discuss who (or what) is the stakeholder (-s) of the company and how can
these stakeholders be related to have an influence on the CSR stance and practice of the
company? Apply sound business judgment and use logical reasoning.

Q3) How is business ethics related to CSR and how is business ethics related to the CSR work
of the business (company)?
It is preferable if you relate this question (Q3) to a specific example, for instance a specific
company of your own choice- especially trying to address questions of ethical dilemmas. For
your choice of company, you are free to use internet to search on the company website for
information. However, in your discussion you are expected show a theoretical understanding
and your argument must be well founded in the course literature. You are expected to analyze
the business situations thouroghly.

You are expected to argue for how the literature can be used for addressing the three
questions asked above. (Of course, you are also welcomed to demonstrate how the literature
can be useful for understanding at least some CSR problems and questions.) Please, also
remember that it is very important to relate your text and to refer to the literature (see rules for
how referencing is made in the Tutorial Manual/ HKR library).
The suggested book chapters and articles recommended for this first assignment are aiming at
introducing you the field, pointing at, and addressing problems of vocabulary and questions of
more principal (theoretical and ethical) nature. One way to get a bit closer to a theoretical
understanding of CSR seen from a company perspective is to look more carefully into how a
company is presenting its work on CSR or sustainability. In Sweden companies like SCA
(forest company), H&M and IKEA are three well known examples of Swedish companies that
are aiming for a high profile in matters of relevance in the CSR context.
