What is religion?

Some of us could simply define what religion is by telling what particular religious group,
sects or denominations they belong to. Yet, religion is understood not only by that kind of
definition. We can understand religion by understanding friendship. Now, what is friendship?

Now let’s take a look at the

picture and remember our
first day in school.

School is where we first begin to

socialize. It's the first moment of
life that demands us to seek
beyond ourselves. Making friends
in school is a daunting task for
some. In our years in school, we
learn lessons beyond textbooks.

Moments of achievements, of failure, of love, of laughter, of loss, of gain, and of change are
shared with friends. This is why school becomes an integral part of our journey to finding true
friendship.

It is God who puts in our hearts the longings to belong to be accepted, to be

appreciated, and to be understood. These longings are little bridges to God's heart, who is the
source and fountain of thee friendship we all long for. Thus, Ps. 63:2 says, “O God, You are
my God, for You I long! For You my body yearns for You my soul thirsts, like a land parched,
lifeless, and without water.” These longings drive us to seek rest in His sweet embrace. As St.
Augustine said, "My heart is restless until it rests in you, on Lord .”

The remedy for all our longings is to enter into a meaningful relationship that we call
friendship. When we share a friendship with someone, we share ourselves. We open a part of
ourselves that we offer willingly only to people we trust.

What then, is friendship?

According to the Encarta dictionary, "friendship is a cooperative and supportive

relationship between two or more people."

Religion is an example of friendship because it allows us to offer and commit ourselves

in a cooperative and supportive relationship as we interact with its members, including
God's ministers who deliver to us the message (priests/clergy and teachers/catechists)
and the laity.
The significant others in our lives connect us to the one who initiated this friendship
with us. Christ Himself affirmed this in Jn. 15:15: “I do not call you servants anymore,
because a servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you my
friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my
Father.”
As a friend, God continues to unveil Himself to us in
revelation. If we will only listen, we will hear many things
about Him.

Catechism for Filipino Catholics tells us that in Revelation,

God is reaching out to us in friendship, so we can get to
know and love Him (CFC, 101).

It is God's personal communication of His nature and His plan

to save us all in His love. RELIGION, then, opens to us the
door to this friendship for it lets us see and understand God's
message, which we could comprehend only with our hearts.

Catechism for Filipino Catholics gives us five (5) basic

signs that God uses to reveal Himself to us.

A. Natural Sign

The world and everything in it are natural signs of God, the initial way God makes himself
known to us. Yet, in our everyday experience, we meet not only love and friendship the good
and the beautiful, but also suffering, temptation and evil. All creation have become affected by
sin. "Sin entered the world, and with sin, death" (Rom. 5:12). The "natural signs" of the Creator
have thus become disfigured by pollution, exploitation, injustice, oppression and suffering (CFC,
6.)

We cannot choose our parents and siblings, so we have

to accept and love them at their best and at their
worst. The family, aside from being the basic unit of
society, is also the foundation of our faith. It is
through the family that we experience and learn the
unconditional love of God.

The school is also a venue for God to speak to you. The
school is tasked to guide and form you to be effective and
efficient bearers of the good news.

Finally, God speaks to us through the society, the

community, and the country.

B. Biblical Signs

God revealed Himself in

stages.

In the OLD TESTAMENT, God revealed Himself

through biblical signs made up of both deeds and words. He
made covenants with Noah, with Abraham, and with Moses. He performed great works for
His chosen people, and proclaimed their saving power and truth through the prophets’ words
(cf. DV, 2; CCC, 56-64). Through chosen men and women, kings, judges, prophets, priests and
wise men, God led, liberated, and corrected His people. He forgave their sins. He, thus,
revealed Himself as Yahweh, He-who-is-with His people.

“Today, through His inspired word in the Old

Testament, God still reveals Himself to us, and
inspires us to respond to His covenant.” (CFC, 69).
 The Bible is God's written word, whose
message is immortal and endless. That is why
Religion class, Christian Living or Christian
Values are integral parts of our educational
development.

C. In the Church

1. Ecclesial Sign
The Greek word Ecclesia or
ekklesia (in Greek) refers to the
Christian Church. We can learn
from 1 Thes. 1:6-8 that the
church has the responsibility to
preach the gospel. In addition,
“the Church is to edify each
other through working and
worshiping together” (Eph.
4:11-16). Hebrews 10:24-25
says, “And let us consider one
another in order to stir up love
and good works, not forsaking
the assembling of ourselves
together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more
as you see the Day approaching ”. The Church is also "to give benevolent assistance
to the needy" (Acts 11:27-30). The Church is missionary by her very nature,
since she originates from the mission of the Son and the mission the Spirit, according to
the plan of God the Father (AG, 2). Every member of the Church, therefore, shares this
mission, the obligation of spreading the faith Therefore, each one of us has a
message to share and it is our mission to deliver and let it be heard, not what
we say, but by the way we live.

2. Liturgical sign
“Liturgy” originally means the people's
work and public duty in taking part in
Gods redemptive plan. Today, it refers to

3 C. L. E. 7 DCHS, INC.

the official public worship, the Church. Liturgy is an exercise of the priestly
office of Jesus Christ centered in the Eucharist, which commemorates Christ's
Paschal Mystery, so that full public worship is performed by the Mystical Body of Jesus
Christ, that is, by Head and members (SC, 7).

This refers to the prayer and sacramental worship, doctrine, and moral service of
the Church. Our prayer life, whether through our private devotion or our active
participation in the community celebration of faith, allows God to speak through us.

D. In Other Religions

The Church, in her prophetic mission of “reading the

signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of
the Gospel” (GS 4), discerns the seeds of the Word in
the history and culture of all men of good will. Thus,
even non-Christians who do not know the Gospel of
Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a
sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to
do His will as they know it through the dictates of their
conscience, may achieve eternal salvation (LG, 16).

God speaks to us through the reflections and

inspiration of other religions, which should unite and
not divide.

The purpose of religion is to unite its members and

guide them into entering a personal relationship with God.

E. Signs of the Times (Grace)

God speaks to us in our conscience through the interior presence of God (Grace) and in
all the events of our daily lives and word events. These are recognized as signs of the
times.
