1 Standard Features
• A rugged vibration measurement and balance kit you can use on all your rotating
equipment, including grinding wheels, fans, turbines and other devices.

2 Warranty Disclaimer
MaintTech warrants the product to be free from defects in material and workmanship
under normal use and provides service within 2 years from the date of delivery. The
Accelerometers (CTC) have Life Time Warranty. If the instrument malfunctions, do not
attempt to repair the instrument yourself, as this will invalidate the warranty. Warranty
claimed products shall be returned prepaid to MaintTech for service. We reserve the right
to repair or to replace defect products.
Precautions
WARNING: Please read and understand this section before operating your instrument.
Not heeding the warnings or recommendations could result in data loss, data inaccuracy,
damage to the instrument, or injury to you.
WARNING: Ensure the cables and bootstrap cannot be entangled with any rotating or
moving machinery.
CAUTION: Do not use alcohol or any organic solvents to clean the instrument.
CAUTION: Although the instrument has a rugged construction, do not expose it to wet
conditions or store in a damp place, where relative humidity exceeds 95%

3 Instrument Keypad
The keypad has an alternate function key, the ALT key (blue color). The ALT key may be
used in combination with any other key to generate an alternate key code.

4 Instrument LED’s
The CXBalancer® has three LEDs, two are placed on the keypad and one is placed near
the CHARGER-IN connector.
LED 1 (two colors) – This is the Instrument status LED. When the instrument started,
the LED will flash (green and red) for 1-2 seconds. If, after starting, the LED remains
RED, this indicates a general Instrument failure. Normally, after starting-up, this LED will
be off.
LED 2 – This LED is lit when any key is pressed, indicating that the keypad generate key
codes. If one or more keys are damaged, the LED will not be lit when these keys are
pressed.
LED 3 (two colors). Charger status LED. If the charger is not attached, the LED will be off.
Once when the battery charger is plugged-in, the LED will be lit with Green color. If the
charger detects a fault, the LED will be lit in Red. When the battery charging process is
finished, both colors will be activated (Red/Green).
5 External Connectors
Depending on the selected measurement, only some of the transducers are required.

6 Status Bar
On the Display top side, in almost all screens, a status bar is shown as follows:
In the left side is shown as an icon, the power supply source, as follows:
From the battery pack (a battery icon and the battery voltage)
From the external charger (a charger icon and the battery voltage)
From USB cable (a USB icon).
NOTE: When the Instrument is supplied trough USB cable, the battery pack is NOT
charged.
In the right side is shown the current date and time. The date and time can be adjusted
in the System menu.

The Operating System has only three commands are available, as follows:
1. Load application from SD Card
2. PC Communication
3. Run application
If the Instrument doesn’t start normally, the third command will not work, because the
Operating system has found that the application is missing or is corrupted.
First command can be used only if there is at least one application file in the PROGRAM
directory. The application file is named CXBXxxx.cxp, where xxx means the application
version.
If more than one application files exist in PROGRAM directory, a browse list will appear
on the screen. The user can select any of the application to be loaded into the RAM
memory. After selection, the Operating System loads and runs the selected application.
Because the application is stored in the Instrument RAM memory, the application can run
until the Instrument is stopped. To store the application in Flash memory (permanent
storage); inside of application, select System-> Update program command.
If in the SD Card doesn’t exist any application file, the user must select the second
command: PC Communication.
The USB cable must be connected to a computer. The SD Card contents will be published
in the File Browser, acting similarly with any USB Memory Stick. No driver is required;
any computer will recognize automatically the card. Now, the user must copy an
application file (CXBxxx.cxp), in the PROGRAM directory. Then the user must press ESC
key to return to the Operating System window and using the Load application from SD
Card command, he can load the application into the RAM memory.
NOTE: The Operating System can be activated any time if required, as follows:
Switch off the Instrument Press and keep ESC key pressed and start the
Instrument. The Operating System windows will be shown.

NOTE. To save the battery life, just stop the Instrument if it isn’t used. This action can
also be done for short time interval. No damages occur, if the Instrument is started /
stopped frequently.
Also, to save battery life, in the Settings menu can be set a time period for auto stop.
When the keypad wasn't pressed for a longer time than the settings indicate, the
Instrument will be automatically stopped. The user can cancel the stopping sequence, by
pressing any key for 10 seconds, after the auto stop event has occurred.

10.2.1 Introduction
To choose the correct size of the trial weight is an important stage in rotor dynamic
balancing. The trial weight must be large enough for a significant change of the
unbalance vector, but in the same time, it must be small enough not to destroy the rotor.
The unbalance can be represented as shown in Fig. 1. Vector V1 represents the initial
unbalance of the rotor and V2 is the vector obtained by adding a trial weight.

Usually, a change of 20% of the unbalance vector is considered quite acceptable. This
means that V2 vector must be placed outside of a circle, as shown in Fig. 2

Most of the industrial rotors can be balanced, considering a Balance quality grade of 6.3.
In formula [1], by replacing the maximum service speed N with the balancing speed Nb
you can calculate the trial weight (TW):
Where:
R = Trial weight radius
W = Rotor weight [Kg]
Nb = Balancing speed [RPM]
For a two plane balancing, the value of the trial weight will be half of Tw in each balancing
plane (TW/2).
In the Edit Weight menu, you can manually type the required trial weight or press F1 –
Estimate key.
In the last case, the trial weight will be calculated in accordance with formula [2]:
By pressing the F1 key, the trial weight will be calculated using the existing radius (R1),
the rotor mass and the balancing speed:

If the selected trial weight is too low, a warning message will appear on the screen.
This means the selected trial weight doesn’t changed the unbalance vector with more
than 20%.
There might be a lot of reasons for this:
The response of the unbalance in vibration terms is very low (the machine
is too rigid)
The balancing speed is too low
The initial unbalance of the rotor is too much.
In this last situation, even if the trial weight was correctly chosen, the resulting vector
does not change with at least 20%:

The initial unbalance (the red vector) is too much. In this case, even if the trial weight
was chosen correctly, it still cannot change enough the unbalance vector. In this
situation we strongly recommend you to proceed a roughly balance first, then to
complete the balancing with a final balancing procedure.
A general valid rule says: the initial unbalance of the rotor should be comparable with
the selected trial weight.

10.3 Rotor Balancing Section
The balancing function is very simple and guides the user right through the proper
sequence of steps: the initial run, the introduction of a trial weight, the second run, and
finally, the recommendation about the size and location of the weight to be used for
correction.
The balancing implementation should also have the provision for a bit of added
functionality, like one or two planes, adding or removing weights, and additional trim
runs.

Speed unit can be Hz or RPM.
Show unit, detection and unbalance unit cannot be changed during the balancing
session.
You may now perform some dummy measurements to adjust the speed sensor or/and
the transducer(s) position. The measurements are shown only on the screen and they
won’t be saved in the memory.
The measurement begins by pressing the Enter key and can be finished with
the Store key.
The angle increases from zero position, in the reverse direction of shaft
rotation!
The Balancing Status shows a series of icons in red, because either rotor settings or trial
runs weren’t performed, yet.

In this screen you must introduce the actual rotor radius, its mass, its service speed
(maximum run speed for that specific rotor) and optionally, you have to decide if the
balancing tolerance will be used or not.
If the balancing tolerance (ISO 1940 Quality Grade) will be used, you may also need to
introduce the Gravity Mass Centre of that rotor, as follows:
For one plane balancing: not used
For two plane symmetrical rotor: 50%
For two plane non-symmetrical rotor: the gravity mass centre, as
percentage, measured on the Left (VIB1) bearing.
Press F4 to save the settings and to return to the Main Balancing screen.
Depending on the balancing type (one or two plane balancing), you must complete two
or three steps, as follows:

First trial run (trial weight on the left side, located at the balancing radius R1)
Second trial run (trial weight on the right side, located at the balancing radius R2).
On the second and on the third Trial Runs screen you can edit the trial weight:
If you want help with selecting the size of a trial weight, see the page with the
TRIAL WEIGHT. This chapter describes the Calculation of Trial Weight.
Now, you must decide if the trial weight should be removed, after the run, or not.
You MUST proceed as you decided in the "Keep after run" settings. If the default value is
NO, the trial weight will be removed.
NOTE: CXBalancer® proposes you a balancing weight, but you may change it.
To determine the influence coefficients, all the above steps must be performed.
Press ENTER to begin the measurements, only when the rotor reaches the
balancing speed.
Press STORE to finish the measurement, only when the measurements become
stable!

Now, in this screen, F3 and F4 keys will be enabled and the rotor unbalance (in mass unit)
will also appear. Pressing F3 – Add/remove key, the correction mass and the angle will
be shown positive (“+” indicates to add the correction mass) or negative (“-“indicates to
remove the correction mass).
The unbalance can be shown in mass units (gram or oz), in gram ×mm (or oz × in) or in
selected vibration units. Just press several times F4 – Change unit key.
The correction mass must be placed at the appropriate angle into each plane, and a set
of vibration measurements must be done again, by pressing Enter key.
In this moment, we have the possibility of trimming the balance condition even further
or to accept that we are done. If we declare that the job is finished, we can save the
Balancing session into a file. If not, we have to continue by adding/removing correction
mass, as shown on the screen.
Press Menu key and from the popup menu select Save in file. The rotor can be saved in
a file onto the internal memory Card.
Copy this file to your computer.
CXBalancer® is delivered with a USB memory stick. This stick contains BalReport
software. Read the manual (Help) describing how to transfer the balancing file to this
software.
The popup Menu is available only if the influence coefficients exist (the trial runs were
performed).
This menu offers some useful tools:
-Save in file
-Balancing options
-Split settings
-Add vector
-Restore Influence coefficients
-Vibration history.

10.3.1 Using Split Weight
10.3.1.1 Introduction
The split weight function can be useful to (divide) split the correction mass is some fixed
position across rotor circumference.
Split setting is available in the Balancing Main screen, in the popup menu; only if the
calibration runs are done for the rotor (influence coefficients were determined).
To access the popup menu from the Balancing Main menu, just press MENU key:
The split position is numbered from zero to N-1 (where N is the split position across rotor
circumference.
As can be seen below, the numbering is done in the reverse direction of rotor rotation.

10.3.1.2 Splitting weight for Single Plane Balancing
Press MENU key, select the Split Settings line and press ENTER:
Select No of position and type the number of desired position. Select Angle of first
position and the angle for the 0 position (normally, zero position can be considered the
reflective tape position: 0). Select Auto split weight to Enabled.
In the above example, instead to add a weight of 3175 grams at 180, you may split this
weight in two. The first one must be added in the position 2 and the second in the
position 3.

10.3.1.3 Splitting weight for Two Plane Balancing
Press MENU key, select the Split Settings line and press ENTER:
Now, you must set the splitting position, separately, for the first (left) and the second
(right) balancing plane. The number of splitting positions can be any, but not less than
3. You may also activate individually the split weight show, for one or both balancing
planes.
If the split weight is Enabled for both planes, the Main Balancing Menu will show the
weight for the split positions, as below:
If the split weight is Enabled for the first (left) plane, the Main Balancing Menu will show
the weights for split positions, as below:

10.3.2.1 Introduction
The Add vector function is a vector calculator and can be used to calculate the sum of a
series of vectors. The vectors can be expressed in vibration units or in mass unit.
The Add vector screen will be shown. You can add up to four vectors (edit for each vector
the Amplitude and the Phase). The sum of the added vectors will appear on the bottom
of the screen:

If the list is full, as below, just press F3 – Continue and the vector sum will be shown
instead of vector #1, so you are able now to add more three vectors.
10.3.3.1 Introduction
One Run Balancing can normally be achieved by restoring influence coefficients from the
instrument memory. The required balance weight is then normally achieved after the
first run, thereby achieving a true “One Run Balance”.
Preliminary condition
Before to Restore Influence Coefficients from any existing balancing file, is assumed
that:
The new rotor is identically with the rotor from the file.
The previous rotor has a single reference mark, placed on the reflective
tape position, valid for both balancing planes.

The relative positions between vibration transducers and the photocell
remain unchanged.
If any of the above conditions is not true, the balancing of the new rotor will fail. The
Restore Coefficients technique is useful for a series of identical rotors. The Calibration
Runs are required only for the first rotor from the batch, so plenty of time can be saved.
Generally, the procedure works fine when the balancing is done using a Balancing
Machine.
10.3.3.2 Procedure
From the Balancing screen, select Restore Influence Coeff. item and press ENTER or
directly the key number 5:
From the list, select the file from where you want to restore Influence coefficients:

The STATUS icon (in red) shows that any measurement wasn't done for this rotor.
Observe that the F2 - Trial runs is disabled (the Influence Coefficients already exist).
Now press ENTER to take readings and when the readings are stable, press STORE key.
The initial unbalance for the new rotor (in mass unit) will be shown.
Finally, press MENU key and save the rotor data to a file, for the purpose of
documentation.

NOTE: In the above example, the rotor unbalance isn’t within tolerances (the readings
are colored in yellow). The unbalance correction is required, with the weights shown on
the screen.
10.3.4.1 Introduction
Zero position for angle measurement (or the reference position) is defined to be the
position from where the angles of the correction weights are measured. The angle is
measured always in the reverse direction of rotor rotation. For a maximum flexibility, the
CXBalancer® software allows a full editing of the trial weight, as follows:
Mass and radius can be easily understood, but many users do not fully understand the
meaning of the trial weight angle setting.
Below is explained in detail the meaning of the trial weight angle, to avoid any mistake
during the balancing procedure.

If the trial weight will be attached on the same position with the tape, the zero position
for angle measurement will be at tape position. Assuming that the trial weight is defined
having the angle at 0 and the reflective tape is on the shown position:
If the trial weight will be attached on 50 before the tape, reverse to the rotation direction,
the zero position for angle measurement will be the trial weight position. Note in this
case the zero position for angle measurement is NOT the same as the tape position.
Rule: When the weight position is set to 0, the zero position for angle
measurement will be the trial weight position. The position of the
reflective tape is irrelevant.

The zero position for the angle measurement will be on weight position minus the
defined angle (in our example will be the weight position minus 90).
Rule: When the weight position is set to a non-zero value, the zero position for
the angle measurement will be the trial weight position minus the defined
angle. The position of the reflective tape is irrelevant.
10.3.4.4 Conclusion
To avoid confusions, it is a good practice to define the angle for the trial weight at zero
(default setting).
In this condition, the zero position for the angle measurement will always be on the trial
weight position. In other words, the position of the trial weight determines the zero
position for the angle measurement.

If you are a beginner in balancing, it is much better to place the reflective tape in the
position where the trial weight will be mounted. So, you will have a clear zero position,
without confusion: the tape position.
Alternatively, mark the position where you attach each the trial weight. This will be the
reference for the angle measurement for that balancing plane. It is not necessary to
have the same zero position for both left and right balancing planes.
Any mistake in the determination of zero position for the angle measurement, will result
into a wrong placement of the correction weights and, for sure, in erroneous balancing
results.
11 Route measurements
Any Route file is a binary file having .crx extension. The Route files can be downloaded
from computer in Instrument using the CXSpectra© Transfer Menu commands or can be
copied directly onto CXBalancer® micro SD Card, in the Route folder.
To download a Route file with measurements, the next commands Transfer ->
To/From Instrument or Transfer To/From Files must be used.
Before downloading a route in the Machine Database, the contents of the Route files can
be previewed with the CXRouteExplorer application, found onto CXSpectra© Installation
CD. This is a free application and can be used without any Protection Key.

In the upper left corner is shown the hierarchy tree and in the upper right side appears
the current record number (and the total records in the route). In the bottom of the
screen is shown the measurement table. In the first column is shown, in each row, the
measuring unit for:
Total value (vibration overall value, speed or manual points)
Bearing Energy (disable if is not settled in the route editor)
Envelope spectrum unit (disabled if is not settled in the route editor)
The last row shows the measurement time-stamp (only if the Record is measured).
In the Last column is shown the latest measurements existing in the Machine database
(the row is empty if not any previous measurement exist). In the Current column is
shown the result for the measurement (if is done). The row is colored according with the
alarm settings in the Machine database. In the last column (%) is indicated the change
between the Last and Current measurement. A plus (+) sign indicated that the Current
measurement is greater that the last.

11.2.1 Moving in route
Depending on the blue cursor in the item hierarchy, the movement in the route list can
vary. Movement between records can be done with keypad LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys.
If the cursor is placed on Department level, advance in the route will be done from
Department to Department. If the cursor is placed on Machine level, the movement is
done from Machine to Machine a.s.o.
If the Instrument is shutoff, on next start the record counter will remain in the last
position.
Just select (with UP or DOWN arrow keys) the new route and press ENTER. Use F4 to
delete a route from the Card. Press ESC to return without to change the active route.

the record pointer advances automatically to the next record.
Power save (Disabled or Enabled). If is Disabled, the power to accelerometer will
remain ON between consecutive measurements. This can speed up the acquisition
time, but increases the power consumption.
Auto advance (Enabled or Disabled). First measurement in the route is Total
value. Even if the measurement is stable the measurement will never be
automatically saved, but waiting for the user to press the STORE button. For the
remaining measurements (BE and Envelope) the Instrument can save
automatically the measurements when stable, but only if Auto advance setting is
Enabled. Otherwise, the user must save these measurements by pressing the
STORE button.
NOTE. After a setting was changed, the user must press F4 -Save&Exit to save the
settings. If the user presses ESC, the settings won't be changed.
F3 - Show frequency in - (CPM or Hz). The user can select the desired unit for the
Speed measurement.
F4 - Inspection Code - For each Machine the user can add one or more Inspection
Codes. The Inspection Code list is defined in the CXSpectra© Software and will be
transferred together with the route definition.
The Inspection Code items can be added in ANY Direction of the machine:
NOTE: The Inspection Codes will be transferred into the Machine database, in the
Machine Notepad.

Used as an initial “alarm” type survey, whereby if the overall indication is above a
specified value, a more detailed survey is performed to identify the possible cause.
The Overall vibration level "A" in a frequency range, as defined by the following equation,
shall not exceed the Overall Amplitude Acceptance Limit specified for that frequency
range (see also ISO-10816).

The sum of the first three harmonic amplitudes can be calculated as root of squared
value.
Example:
Assuming that:
1 × RPM Amplitude = 7 mm/sec
2 × RPM Amplitude = 5 mm/sec
3 × RPM Amplitude= 2 mm/sec
The sum of the above amplitude can be calculated with the formula:

If you change some setting, just press F4 (Save&exit) to activate the change.
DIN ISO 10816-3 standard allows slightly higher limits when a foundation is
considered flexible than when if it is rigid.
A conclusion from this is also that a resonant condition in principle is not allowed or at
least should be avoided at operation speeds. In practice this also includes the double
speed as well as any other natural excitation frequency such as blade passage etc.
Modern machines have high speeds, flexible bearing supports and foundations and can
be considered as flexible even if it is not mounted on rubber or springs.
DIN ISO 10816-7 plays a very important role for maintenance technicians in the
evaluation of vibrations in centrifugal (rotodynamic) pumps.
The new ISO 10816-7 is valid since August 2009.

The vibration transducers have to be placed on the bearings nearby the monitored rotor.
Use a low frequency range for low speed machines (below 1200 RPM) and a high
frequency range for high speed machines (above 1200 RPM).
1. If the overall vibration is low (below the Overall Amplitude Acceptance Limit) it
may be considered that the machine is running normally, on medium-term and
even long-term. In this case, corrective measures are not necessary and the
equipment can be kept running.
2. If the overall vibration exceeds the Overall Amplitude Acceptance Limit, the
following harmonics have to be analyzed:
a) If the amplitude at 1 × RPM exceeds 75% of the overall amplitude and the

amplitude values for the second and the third harmonics 2 × RPM and 3 ×
RPM remains low, than the rotor is unbalanced. A successful balancing
procedure will significantly reduce the overall vibration of the machine.
b) If the sum of the first three harmonics (calculated as above) is more than
75% of overall amplitude and the amplitude values at 2 × RPM and 3 ×
RPM are also important, then:
The machine is misaligned
Or
The rotor is unbalanced and the bearings have looseness.
When the peak at 2 × RPM exceeds 1/3 of the fundamental amplitude, it may
by misalignment. When the amplitude of the second harmonic (2 × RPM)
is more than 1/2 of the fundamental, than most probably is misalignment.
Before balancing, just check the alignment first and then correct it, if
necessary. Measure again to see the improvement.
c) If the sum of the first three harmonics is more than 75% of overall
amplitude, then definitely the machine has also other mechanical faults,
which might be seen at different frequencies than those already displayed.
In this case, it is no use to balance the rotor, because you won’t get an
important decrease of the overall vibration. You should rather perform an
investigation by spectrum analysis to identify the real sources of these
large amounts of vibration.

The above diagram is just a guide to interpret the bearing condition value. If vibrations
of other causes (e.g. flow surge, gear mesh) are within the selected frequency range,
this can give a high bearing condition value, even if the bearing is not damaged. A high
bearing condition value can also be acquired if the bearing is poorly lubricated or is
overloaded (e.g. by misalignment, or large belt forces).

If the averaging is disabled, the spectrum is shown live on screen until the user presses
Hold. When the spectrum is measured (with or without averaging) the user can use the
cursor and also the Zoom function. This is important, because LIVE measurements can
be done sometimes, but if the user does not have available cursors, he can see nothing.
The Zoom function makes the zoom around the cursor position. The Zoom is a true

zoom. This means that on the screen ALL the spectrum lines (300 lines= LCD Display

17 Frequency Response
The frequency response plots are a very useful way to represent the amplitude and
phase of a system as a function of frequency. This is referred to as the frequency
domain behavior of a system.
The frequency response of a system is presented as two graphs, one showing amplitude
and the other one showing phase, as below:
Fig.1 - Ideal Frequency Response Plot - Resonance is indicated by peak amplitude and
sharp, significant change of phase at the frequency of the peak.

Press F2- Settings and adjust the Frequency Response plot parameters.
Press F4-Save&Exit to save these parameters and to return to the Frequency Response
plot.
To begin the measurements, press Enter. The actual machine RPM will be shown with a
cursor, as shows the following picture:
Adjust the machine RPM and wait until the amplitude and phase will be stable. Press
Store to take the first reading. Change the RPM again and repeat the above step. You
can take up to 200 readings.

You may press F1-Hold to stop temporary the data acquisition and to visualize the
readings.
In the Hold mode, the cursor can be moved with the left and right arrow keys. Press
again Enter key to resume.
When the Frequency Response window is in Hold status, the Menu key is also active:
You may also use the F3-Zoom X key to enlarge a plot portion around the cursor
position.
NOTE: When RPM is changed, the measurements won’t be automatically saved. You
must press the Store key, to save the measurements in the plot. This way, before
storing the measurements, you can wait until the readings become stable. The
Frequency Response plot will have a higher accuracy. When all the points were collected,
just save the Frequency Response plot into a file and exit the menu. The file is saved onto

the memory Card in the RES folder. Each Frequency Response file has the .cxr extension.
Once you exit, you cannot return to collect measurements from the saved file, but any
saved file can be viewed:

Here you must edit the sensitivity of the Transducer that you are going to use together
with the CX Balancer. The sensitivity is mentioned in the Calibration Certificate for each
transducer.
Here you can also edit the Settling time for the Accelerometer. It is the time that an
Accelerometer needs for a stable measurement. This time is mentioned in the data sheet
for any Accelerometer.

F2 -Signal. Measure the mV AC from the transducer or an external signal
generator.
F3 -Vibration. Measure the vibration in the transducer unit (g or mm/sec).
The measurement result depends on the transducer sensitivity. This function measures
the signal from both inputs. If there are no transducers connected, the signal must be
lower than 3-5 mV a.c. The frequency range is fixed to 4-3200 Hz.
1. Cable fault
The accelerometer is placed on the floor (no vibration). The bias must be near 12 V.
Keeping the transducer fixed, move the cable with the hand. The indication of Signal
must remain less than 5mV. Otherwise the cable is defective. Shake the transducer. The
Signal must increase. Otherwise the cable (or the transducer) is defective.
3. Instrument accuracy
With the transducer set to be velocity, an external known signal must be connected (e.g.
from a signal generator). In the Transducer check menu, the Signal or Vibrations must
be selected.

If you need to replace the batteries with new ones, please be aware of the following
aspects:
There is a thermistor on the bottom of the battery compartment (See the picture below).
This thermistor is very important for the monitoring of batteries temperature and may
not be damaged when changing the batteries.
