Dura Lex Sed Lex
Dura Lex Sed Lex
Dura Lex Sed Lex
A legal maxim in Latin or brocard that literally means “the law is harsh, but it is the law." The law
may be hard to observe or difficult to obey, but it remains the law and must be followed just the
same. Even draconian laws must be followed or observed.
According to renowned Spanish jurist Sanchez Roman, law in its specific sense is a rule of
conduct. Laws as rules of conduct are supposed to be not only obligatory but also just, They
should be obeyed by all for the benefit of all. But what if the law is not just? What if it is unusual,
bizarre, or unreasonable, should the people still obey it? The answer is YES. The law may be
weird (and may have been made by stupid lawmakers) but it is the law. Simply put, the people
must still abide by it. Fortunately, we do not have the following strange laws and heaven forbids
our lawmakers will copy them!

(England and Wales);
