Kimberly F. Cabigao and Christine D. Pastrana Authors

To the Learners
In completing this module, carefully read and follow the instructions; write your
answers on the provided answer sheet; record your discoveries in your notebook; and
don’t be shy to ask questions if you find some parts challenging. Make a difference.
Expectations
To guide you in your journey, here are the expectations that you must meet:
 differentiate one text type from another;
 examine texts based on the text type features;
 appreciate the message of a reading material through
comparing it with one’s experiences; and
 express one’s ideas through writing a text.

Pre-test
Carefully read the items. Identify the text type of the following paragraphs. Write the
letter of your answer on your answer sheet.

1. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, public health officials ask us to do something

not natural to our very social species: Stay away from each other. But it won’t be easy.
It can increase the risk of a variety of health problems: heart disease, depression,
dementia, and even death. A study shows that chronic social isolation increases the
risk of mortality by 29%. (Miller 2020)
2. Physical distancing helps limit the spread of COVID-19 – this means we keep a
distance of at least 1m from each other and avoid spending time in crowded places or
in groups. Protect yourself and others. Break the chain of transmission. (WHO Western
Pacific 2020)
3. The first week of the ECQ was unreal. I burst into tears one night from all the sad news
I was seeing on my feed, but the anxiety quickly went away after that episode,
because the wheels in my head were back, turning at full speed. (Sioson 2020)
4. “Wanna play marbles?” The new kid said, shaking out his sack. “Sure,” Lachlan replied,
then gasped and recoiled. Amid the cluster of small round glass balls, an eyeball slyly
winked. (Fraser 2020)
5. Avoid non-essential contact with others to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The
internet offers a means to stay connected through the days of isolation. Vroom is an
app that has become a go-to for video work meetings, happy hours, and even parties.
The free version allows for up to 100 people to participate in a single chat — the catch
being these can last only up to 40 minutes. (Criddle 2020)

Looking Back
As we begin, let us recall your previous lesson on paragraphs.

A paragraph is a series of related sentences developing a central idea

called the topic. Consider that the topic is like an umbrella that covers
other information. Information about the topic are called supporting Self-care
details which provide additional knowledge on the central idea.
Example: There are different ways to practice self-care.

One way is to look after one’s physical self by eating right and Physical Emotional
Self-care Self-care
exercising. Another is to check the emotional state by being
mindful of one’s feelings and behavior.
The topic is self-care found in the first sentence. The other
sentences contain supporting details which are examples of self-care acts.

PM’s letter to Thailand’s 20 richest people (English translation)

By THE NATION
The following is a translation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s letter sent to Thailand’s 20
richest people following a special 10-minute speech broadcast on national TV at 6pm last
Friday. The letter was dated April 20.
Thailand is facing a Covid-19 outbreak which is one of the gravest crises the country and the
world have seen. The disease has affected both social relationships and the economy at an
unprecedented level. Now is the time for Thai people to work together on all levels, especially
those who have strong knowledge, abilities and

1
financial resources. This is why I am reaching out to you who are considered the elders of
society.
I deeply appreciate that many of you have already helped people in several aspects, but I must
ask you to do more. Please use your abilities and resources to help Thai people who are facing
one of biggest obstacles in their lives in the fastest and most efficient manner.
I do not ask for donations or handouts, all I ask is to send me details of projects that you are
ready to carry out. I also ask that those projects should reach all groups of Thai people and all
parts of the country, as well as help them in any aspect of their lives in a tangible way.
I also welcome suggestions as to how the government can help or facilitate those projects so
they succeed. I would be highly thankful if you could send me the details by next week.
Please kindly consider my request and thank you in advance.

General Prayut Chan-o-cha Prime Minister

Task 3: Circles of Life

Compare and contrast the actions and decisions of the Thai Prime Minister with
those of your community or barangay leaders in providing better services to the people
during the pandemic. Use the Venn diagram on your answer sheet to express your
answers.

Text Types
As you notice, the text that you read delivers a message, follows a structure, and
serves a purpose. These are some of the considerations in identifying the text type of a
composition. Text types refer to the forms of writing that follow similar features. They
categorize writing according to its structure and characteristics.
For example, a diary is written to record personal experiences while a recipe is
for giving clear instructions in cooking. Different purposes of writing are expressed in
various forms. Study the text types below to know their features.
1. NARRATIVE IN LITERATURE
PURPOSE: KEY FEATURES:
To entertain through telling a story,  Vivid details Interesting events
develop real or imagined experiences  Clear storytelling
EXAMPLE: There was a man of Ch’i who desired to have gold. He dressed up
properly and went out to the market in early morning. He went straight to the gold
dealer’s shop and snatched the gold away and walked off. The officers arrested
him and questioned him: “Why, the people were all there. Why did you rob them of
the gold in broad daylight?” And the man replied, “I only saw the gold. I didn’t see
any people.” – LiehTzu
2. EXPOSITORY
PURPOSE: KEY FEATURES:
To analyze a set of  Claim/ topic

diagram, table, charts, etc.)
EXAMPLE: The key to our success has been absolute transparency with the public
– sharing every detail of how this virus is evolving, how it is spreading and what the
government is doing about it, warts and all. Testing is absolutely critical with a fast-
travelling virus like this. We have tested over 350,000 cases so far – some patients
are tested many times before they are released, so we can say they are fully cured.
Altogether, we’re talking about one out of 145 or one out of 150 people having been
tested so far. – South Korea Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, World Economic
Forum
3. EXPLANATORY
PURPOSE: KEY FEATURES:

EXAMPLE: A novel coronavirus (CoV) is a new strain of coronavirus. Initially, the
disease caused by the novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China, has been
named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) – ‘CO’ stands for corona, ‘VI’ for virus,
and ‘D’ for disease. Like other respiratory illnesses, it can cause mild symptoms
including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and fever. It can be more severe for
some persons and can lead to pneumonia or breathing difficulties and organ failure. -
Unicef.org/Vietnam
4. RECOUNT (FACTUAL AND PERSONAL)
PURPOSE: KEY FEATURES:
To retell an event or experience –  Sequenced events
writer did not experience the  Use of past tense
moment but wrote about it (Factual)  Specific people, places, and

EXAMPLE: I could only think of two things: if I have it, how to keep from infecting
my wife and little boy; and infecting all these other people in the train. Anxiety sank in
more deeply as I began putting the pieces together. At that time, our care facility did
not have enough personal protective equipment and there was a lack of disinfectant.
My colleagues and I had to create our own masks out of gauze bandages, while more

EXAMPLE: Most countries still have sporadic cases or defined clusters. We must all
take heart from that. As long as that’s the case, those countries have the opportunity
to break the chains of transmission, prevent community transmission and reduce
the
burden on their health systems. The rule of the game is: never give up. Let hope be
the
antidote to fear. Let solidarity be the antidote to blame. Let our shared humanity be the
antidote to our shared threat. – WHO Director-General Tedhos Adhanom

the readers.

Task 5: Passing the Threshold

Now that you already know the text types, you will practice recognizing them in this
activity. First, write the text type of the selection. Then, write a one to two-sentence
explanation of your answer. Write your responses on your answer sheet.
1. Yesterday, unlike my typical quarantine routine, I woke up early. The moment my
alarm went off at 8:00am, I jumped out of bed and rushed to the bathroom to
shower. Fifteen minutes was all it took for me to bath and dress. I was ready to
go. My heart couldn’t keep the excitement and joy. Finally, we were allowed to go
out.
2. Once upon a time, the world lived as if there was no pause nor end. It was all
hustle, grind, and run until everyone was breathless and exhausted from all the
work they had to do. Then, life changed when the virus spread. People couldn’t
go out of their homes. Work and school stopped. Time seemingly slowed like
never before.
3. Alcohol-based hand rubs reduce the growth of microorganisms by dissolving the
bacteria’s cellular membrane.
4. Dr. Mary Grace Dacuma of the UP Pandemic Response Team has released
findings from a recent study on how an epidemic happens and what an epidemic
wave is. She noted that the COVID-19 epidemic in the Philippines most likely
started with an imported case from an infected person or persons who entered
the Philippines. The infected person with the virus is likely the index case that
spread the virus to others locally. Dacuma pointed out that the index case(s),
especially those that did not cause local transmission, does not form part of the
epidemic wave. (Manila Bulletin 2020)
5. This virus does not have a nationality, it does not have an agenda or a political
affiliation, it exists to spread where, when and how it can. The only thing that can
stop it is community and cooperation. This is not a time for blame or division…
The future is being written today, let’s write it together with all of our hearts and
our humanity. (Morgan, J. & Rosemberg, A. 2020)
Task 6: Facing the World
In this activity, you will be given a set of facts. You need to use these ideas in
writing your own composition. Follow the steps below.
1. Read the information in the Facts box as basis of your written output.
2. Create a writing plan on your answer sheet. Choose a text type that
you want to write. You can choose to write a literary narrative,
explanatory, expository, recount, or persuasive text.
3. Explain your chosen text type. Consider the text purpose and audience.
4. Make sure that your composition follows the features of the text type.

Facts
Tatay Carlos, an 82-year-old street vendor, was gifted with a new mountain bicycle
by Fe Carandang, a business owner.
Since public transportation was limited due to the community quarantine, Tatay
Carlos walked the roads of Makati to Pasay to sell candies.
Initially, Tatay Carlos asked to buy the bicycle, which originally costs 4,500php, for
2,000php since that was his only money. After a week, he returned again to the shop to
look at the bike when seller Fe Carandang gave it to him for free.

Check Your Understanding
