Photoinitiator
General IRGACURE 500 is a liquid mixture of two photoinitiators. It is used to
initiate the photopolymerisation of chemically unsaturated prepolymers
- e.g. acrylates - in combination with mono- or multifunctional
monomers.

Chemical Composition IRGACURE 500 is a 1:1 mixture by weight of :

Physical Properties Appearance: light yellow liquid
(typical values)
Viscosity at 20°C: 90 mPa s (cone/plate viscosity tester)

3
Specific density at 20°C: 1.11 g/cm

Miscibility at 20°C (g/100 g solution):

Miscibility in most common organic solvents, as well as most acrylate
based monomers, exceeds 50g/100g solution.

Applications IRGACURE 500 may be used after adequate testing alone or in

combination with suitable coinitiators, such as amines for applications
such as UV curable clear coatings for paper, metal and plastic
materials.

Its low viscosity provides an additional advantage lowering the viscosity

of the total formulation.

As a liquid initiator IRGACURE 500 is especially suitable to be used for

the dispersion in water based UV formulations.

The amount of IRGACURE 500 required for optimum performance

should be determined in trials covering a concentration range.

Recommended concentration:

2.0 – 6.0 % IRGACURE 500

Safety and Handling IRGACURE 500 should be handled in accordance with good industrial
practice. Detailed information is provided in the Safety Data Sheet.

IRGACURE 500 is sensitive to visible light and any exposure to sunlight

should be avoided. Opened drums should be closed after use to
protect the product against light.

Storage at under 18°C may lead to partial solidification. It is

recommended not to use the remaining liquid phase. To reliquify the
product heat contents to 25-35 °C, e.g. by placing the drum into a hot
water bath (50-60 °C). This procedure does not affect the effectiveness
of the product.
