On September 20th, 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by a hurricane. When Hurricane Maria slammed into the
Caribbean island, it was the most powerful hurricane to hit the US territory in nearly 90 years. It knocked
out electricity to the whole island and caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.
Most people probably don’t think of it as being part of the United States, but the people who live in
Puerto Rico definitely do. It has been a territory since 1898, and its 3.4 million people are US citizens.
After the hurricane, getting aid to Puerto Rico was difficult, and the US government was fairly slow to
react. Luckily for Puerto Rico, they have a man called José Andrés.
José Andrés is a chef who has made a huge difference to this devastated island. When the hurricane
struck, he immediately decided to go to Puerto Rico and take his skills to help out with the disaster relief.
José Andrés was born in Spain, but it was in the US where he became famous for his modern approach to
cooking. He has nearly 30 restaurants there now, but in the months following Hurricane Maria, he was
usually to be found in Puerto Rico.
José Andrés arrived on the devastated island a few days after the storm to see how he could help on the
ground. He is not a disaster relief expert, so the kind-hearted chef began doing what he does best. He
found a kitchen, bought some ingredients, and began to cook. That first day, José Andrés and his small
team made about a thousand meals. After that, he recruited an army of chefs and volunteers, and together
they served more than three million meals to the hungry people of Puerto Rico. Preparing meals for so
many people is a massive task, requiring trained chefs, thousands of volunteers and a lot of sandwiches!
____ 44. José Andrés was well known for being an expert in these situations.
____ 45. On the first day, José Andrés and his team made 100 meals.
