The efficiency of a screw jack may be defined as the
ratio between the ideal effort to the actual effort.
Ideal effort is the effort required
to move the load, neglecting friction and actual
effort is the effort required to move the load taking
friction into account. It is denoted
by η.

Thrust Collar
When a thrust collar is used, axial load is taken up
by the thrust collar, so that the load does not rotate
with the screw.

Clutches are required when shafts must be
frequently connected and disconnected.
b) A multiple disc clutch has }ve plates having four pairs of active friction surfaces. If the
intensity of pressure is not to exceed 0.127N/mm2, find the power transmitted at 500 r.p.m. The outer
and inner radii of friction surfaces are 125 mm and 75 mm respectively. Assume uniform wear and
take coefficient of friction = 0.3. (Hint : Calculate the angular velocity from the rpm and then find the
power with the torque
