MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

Relations and Functions

OBJECTIVE

1. Use functional notations to solve real world problems.

WHAT I KNOW

Find the maximum or minimum value of the function

1. 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 + 2 2. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4 3. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 1 4. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 1 5. 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 6𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 + 6

WHAT’S IN

We will consider the relationship of the area of a circle and its radius. The area A of a circle can
be expressed as a function of the radius r, that is, 𝐴 = 𝜋 𝑟 2 . However, the circumference C of a circle
can be expressed as a function of its radius r: 𝐶 = 2𝜋𝑟. There are infinite number of applications of
functions that can be demonstrated to real world situations.

WHAT’S NEW

Example # 1: The director of Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) changes a
taxi fare of 𝑃 30.00 for the first 100 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 and 𝑃 2.50 for every succeeding 200 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 or a portion thereof.
Taxi fare is a function of the distance travelled. Devise a formula on how he can compute the fare. Ans:
𝒇(𝒙) = 𝟐. 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟑𝟎

Example # 2: The general manager of Computer Sales Center is paid a monthly salary of 𝑃 120,000.00
plus 5% commission on sales. Express his total monthly pay using functional notation. Assume that
he sells 𝑥 pesos of goods per month. Compute his income if his sales is 𝑃 1.5 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑜𝑛. Ans. a. 𝑰(𝒙) =
𝟎. 𝟓 𝒙 + 𝟏𝟐𝟎, 𝟎𝟎𝟎 b. 𝑰(𝒙) = 𝑷 𝟏𝟗𝟓, 𝟎𝟎𝟎. 𝟎𝟎

Example # 3: The sum of two positive numbers is 100. Let one of the numbers be 𝑥 and express the
product 𝑃 of the two numbers as a function of 𝑥. Ans. 𝑷(𝒙) = 𝒙 (𝟏𝟎𝟎 – 𝒙) = 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝒙 – 𝒙𝟐

Example #4: A rectangle has a perimeter of 10 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠. Express the area 𝐴 of the rectangle as a function
of the width 𝑥. Ans. 𝑨 = 𝟓𝒙 – 𝒙𝟐

Example #5: Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), an Italian, was one of the most outstanding astronomers and
mathematicians of the seventeenth century. He is well known for his contributions in the study of
falling objects. He showed that if an object is dropped from a certain height, then the distance d it falls
is a function of the time t elapsed, as shown in the table below

Time (s) 0 1 2 3 4 5
Distance (m) 0 4.9 19.6 44.1 78.4 122.5

a. Express the distance d as a function of time t. 𝒅 = 𝒇(𝒕) = 𝟒. 𝟗 𝒕𝟐

b. Find the distance traveled by the object in 6 seconds. 𝟏𝟕𝟔. 𝟒 𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔
c. How long does the object take to travel a distance of 490 meters? 𝒕 = 𝟏𝟎 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒔

WHAT IS IT

Solve the following problems.

1. The demand function for a certain product is given by

(𝑥 + 5 )2
𝑝 = 289 −
10,000
a. Find 𝑥 as a function of 𝑝.
b. Use the result of part (a) to find the number of units sold when the price is 𝑃 189.00
2. The nutritionist of FLC Foods, Inc. designed a new product for everybody’s consumption and
believes that the variable cost in producing the said product is 𝑃 950.00 per unit and the fixed
cost is 𝑃 60,000.
a. Write the total cost 𝐶 as function of the product 𝑥 sold.
b. If the selling price for each product is 𝑃 1,700.00, how many units must be sold to break-even
or to make some profit?

3. Express V as the value of the farm inherited by a man having 𝑃1,000,000.00 worth of building,
livestock, and equipment in terms of the number of hectares x on the farm if each hectare is
valued at 𝑃 120,000.00

4. The demand function for a particular product is given by

2,000
𝑝=
10 + 𝑥
where 𝑝 is the price per unit and x is the number of units sold.
a. Find 𝑥 as a function of 𝑝.
b. Use the result of part (a) to find the number sold when the price is 𝑃 10,000.00

5. The product of two positive integers is 120. Let one of the integers be 𝑥, express the sum of the
two integers as a function of 𝑥.

ASSESSMENT

Solve the following.

1. If the volume of a right circular cone is 6 𝑐𝑢𝑏𝑖𝑐 𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠, express the surface area 𝑆 of the right
circular cone as a function of the radius 𝑟.

2. The area 𝐴 of an equilateral triangle is one-fourth the square root of three times the square of its
side 𝑠. The height h is the product one-half the square root of three and its side 𝑠. Express the
area 𝐴 of an equilateral triangle as a function of its height ℎ.

3. Express the area of an equilateral triangle in terms of its perimeter. Use 𝐴 for area and 𝑃 for
perimeter.

4. A wire 252 𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 long will be bent into shape of right triangle whose sides are the ratio of
3: 4: 5. How long is the hypotenuse of the triangle?

5. A rectangle of length 10 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 and width 4 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 is inscribed in a circle. How long is the radius
of the circle?
