I was never interested (0) ___in___ social (1) networking sites until I tried Tweeter. It’s both useful
and a lot of fun. I (2) follow about 100 people. Some are connected with work – Twitter is great for
sharing (3) links to interesting articles. Others are celebrities or sports stars. I don’t tweet that often
but I sometimes reply to a few people. I’ve had some interesting conversations – some complete
strangers, some with TV stars, musicians and even politicians. I’ve even (4) downloaded an app for
my phone so I can use it when I’m on the train.
It’s a nightmare!
I’ve always had trouble sleeping, but these days my (5) sleep is getting worse. Actually, my problem
isn’t getting to sleep, its staying (6) awake. Take last night, for example. I was (7) Tired when I went
to bed at 11.00 and I was fast asleep by 11.30. But then I woke up at 3.00 after a terrible (8)
nightmare. Soon I was (9) wide awake and it was impossible to get back to sleep. Sometimes when
I’m awake at that time I get extremely depressed and feel like it’s the end of the (10) world. So I read
a book, answered some email, and finally got back to sleep at about 5.30. The alarm went off at seven
and I went off to work feeling awful.
Example:
10. I had planned to go to the gym after work, but I was too tired.
GOING
I was going to the gym after work, but I was too tired.
11. I’d agreed to take Dave and Tina to the airport, but I forgot!
SUPPOSED
I was supposed to take them to the airport, but I forgot!
A. Read the text below. For questions 1 – 5, choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which you think fits
best according to the text. (10 pts, 2 pt each)
When musician Colin Baker won five hundred thousand pounds in a competition, it seemed the
answer to his dreams. Almost immediately, he bought a house and made his own CD recording of
some classical music. He intended to save the rest of his money and retire, even though he was only
in his late forties.
Then he saw a violin in a shop. It was of such high quality that even top professional players are rarely
able to afford one like it. “I’d never felt money was important until then,” he explained. “Even with the
money I’d won, I wasn’t sure I could afford to buy the violin, so I started to leave the shop. Then I
thought I’d just try it, and I fell in love with the beautiful sound it made. I knew it was perfect both for
live concerts and for recordings.”
Now all the money has gone. “My wife can’t have the study room I promised her, and I can’t retire,”
says Colin, “but it doesn’t matter.” His wife says, “I sometimes wish he was more responsible with
money, but I’m still pleased for him. I’ve always helped him in his career, as he’s helped me, by
sharing everything. We weren’t unhappy with our jobs, so we didn’t really need the money to escape,
and although Colin considered retiring, I know he wouldn’t be happy doing that – he loves music too
much. I think he did the right thing.”
B. For questions 1 – 8, read the text below and decide which answer (A, B, C or D) best fits each
gap. There is an example at the beginning (0). (10 pts, 1 pt each)
