Ans: The coastal plains of India are located along the Arabian sea coast in
the west and along the Bay of Bengal in the east.
2.Write a short note on the lagoons of coastal plains.(3m)
Ans: Lagoons are a stretch of saltwater bodies.
➢ They are separated from the sea by a low sand bank or coral reef.
➢ Lagoons are also called Kayals in the native language.
3.Write about the vegetation of coastal plains.(3m)
Ans: The land of the coastal plain is very fertile.
➢ Farming of jowar, bajra, groundnut and cotton is done in the Gujarat
coastal region.
➢ The Konkan region is known for the production of rice, coconut,
mangoes and spices.
➢ Farming of coffee, cocoa, banana and tea plantation is also carried out
in the coastal Plains.
4.What are islands? Where are the Indian Islands situated? (3m)
Ans: Islands are piece of subcontinental land surrounded by water from all
sides.
There are two groups of Islands.
➢ The Andaman and Nicobar island are situated at the juncture of Bay of
Bengal and Andaman sea.
➢ The Lakshadweep Island are situated in the Arabian sea.

5.What are the significance of Coastal Plains? (5m)


Ans: The coastal plains of India are famous throughout the world for its tourist
attractions, wild life sanctuaries, national parks and resorts.
• Most of the international trade is carried out from the ports of Mumbai,
Chennai, Kochi and Vishakhapatnam.
• There are rich deposits of minerals, oil and natural gas .
• Cultivation of rice, coconut, sugarcane and spice is also carried out.

6.The soil around the deltas of rivers are more fertile than other soils. Why?

Ans: Rivers carry pebbles, sand and silt. The deposits made by the rivers
during their flow make the soil alluvial which is more fertile and fit for
agriculture.
