Capacity Planning
Capacity is the upper limit or ceiling on the load that an operating unit can handle. Capacity planning includes
equipment, space and employee skills. Capacity planning determines many important factors such as operating costs,
initial costs, competitiveness, long term commitment etc. It impacts long term planning.
The key point of capacity planning in the admission process is the admission test. NSU authority needs to focus on
capacity planning at this step. The last admission test, that was conducted a few weeks ago, had around 2200
applicants. All these applicants were supposed to be accommodated in the regular classrooms and exam halls.
However, NSU also used some temporary settlement to accommodate the candidates in addition to its regular
facilities. For example, NSU often conducts admission test in its open space on level-5.
Screening & verification of applications can be done before the admission test. Verification is done after the
admission test selection normally. If applications were screened and verified before the admission test, only
the screened and verified applicants would be able to sit for the admission test. This would decrease the load
on admission test to some extent.
NSU can enhance its design capacity by conducting the admission test in two groups. The admission test of
the two different groups can be taken on two different days or at two different times on the same day. There
can be set of questions for different groups. As the exam would be conducted at two different times, the
effective capacity would also increase as the faculty members and supporting staffs could be divided into two
groups as well. The actual capacity would also increase in this process as NSU would be able to accommodate
more students in two groups.
According to economies of scale, NSU is conducting its admission test on its optimal rate of efficiency with its current
design capacity. Hence, it is necessary to increase the design capacity here.
Apart from the admission test, the form collection can be done in two ways: online & from banks. Necessary fees are
required to be paid at the banks. So here NSU is outsourcing its financial services from different banks. NSU also has
in-house facilities to support the admission committee to run the admission process. Finance & Account department,
IT department & other departments inside NSU support the admission process.

Bottleneck:
NSU has many bottlenecks in the admission process which creates problems in the process. NSU authority should
address these bottlenecks & take necessary steps to improve the situation. Some of the bottlenecks are:
NSU has shortage of staffs and faculty members in proportionate to the number of applicants who apply for
admission each semester. The applicants are often accommodated in unusual venues like open spaces, labs etc
for admission test. It is sometimes difficult to find invigilators for all these rooms. Besides, NSU often
conduct admission test on weekends which means the faculty members & staffs have to work on weekends.
NSU should look for alternative options. They can conduct the admission test on semester breaks or on
weekdays extending the academic calendar one day. Outsourcing can also be a good alternative.
Applicants need to collect the form from banks. However, if they apply online, they need to download the
form and then submit it to NSU. So, ultimately they have to come to NSU in person. NSU can introduce
online form where applicants can apply online & submit in online as well.
Those who come to NSU to submit the form have to come to NSU to submit the form and then they need to
go to the banks to pay the fees. The banks are often far from NSU and there are often long queues in banks.
NSU can manage and set up some temporary bank-booths during the admission period to solve the distance
problem. Online payment has recently been introduced by NSU which is solving the long queue problem. But
this online payment system should be promoted more.
