“Life Consequences”
The Legend of Ilog Marbel or Bulok Creek implies an essential message to all of us.
Maribel, who is the main character of the story who has a very unpleasant behavior towards
others that led her to a bad karma, allows us to reflect ourselves about our values and beliefs as
Filipinos. Being kind and respectful to other people is one of the values and culture of Filipino
which Maribel failed to be one in the story.
There is also unfairness in the story, just like how the Agwador let Maribel get through the
line to fetch some water just because he admires the beauty of Maribel which we can actually
experience true to life and honestly speaking, this kind value or behavior is what some Filipinos
lack. Some people will always value and look first on the outside of a person rather than on the
inside just because it is visible as it is on the outside but it’s never an excuse to treat others in an
unfair way and it’s not excuse to let other good looking people physically have the more
advantage. Although looks don't really matter in the long run, but they do have a part to play in
the way people see you. But we should value the inner beauty more and believe that inner
beauty is something that will be the same, it will only get better if not the same. It is something
that will last forever in the person. It is something that has the ability to make people love you no
matter what.
In terms of Maribel’s character in the story that is being unkind and disrespectful to elder
people that led her to a bad karma and it tells us that we should always choose to be kind and
respectful and this is one of the cultures of Filipinos. The kindness that we give will always come
back to us, just like what other people say “you get what you give” and that’s how Maribel arrived
on a very unfortunate event.
There is also one thing that Maribel showcases one of the cultures of Filipinos in a certain
part where Maribel would fetch water by herself for her family which means Filipinos are also
family oriented. That Filipinos are known for having strong and close family ties. They place high
regard and put importance on their family before anything else. They work all day and do all they
can to feed and provide for their family. But this doesn’t mean Maribel is a good person just
because she values her family.
In conclusion, this story tells us that we are always responsible for our actions and there
will always be consequences and it may not be in accordance with our liking. We should always
watch out with the karma that life will give us that can be either be good or bad and it depends on
our behavior and treatment towards other people. We may always have the freedom to make our
choices but we are not free to choose the consequences.
