I What is in?

CAD is in!
Computer -aided drawing is a technique where the attributes of the computer and
those of the designer are combined together into a problem solving team. Using this
software would mean faster and easier production of quality output. CAD is an
essential skill to be acquired by draftsman nowadays in order to finish an assigned
task.
I What is it?

Lesson 1: Basic Concept of CAD

Originally CAD includes any techniques that use computers in the design process including drafting,
stress analysis and motion analysis. But over the last 35 years, CAD has come to refer more
specifically to Computer Aided Design and Drafting.

Machine parts that have been modeled can be assembled in the virtual environment of the
computer. The relative motion of moving parts can be animated on the computer. The part can be
analyzed computationally and redesigned. The machine tool path or mold filling flow to fabricate the
part can be modeled on the computer. The part model can be downloaded to a rapid prototyping
system that can create a physical model of the part in a few hours with virtually no human
intervention.

Capabilities of CAD

Some of the important capabilities of using CAD are;

1) Presentations
- You can create fine drawings with
presentation symbols and text styles.
- You can use CAD program to make on
screen presentations.
2) Flexibility in editing
- CAD provides the flexibility to make
quick alterations to drawings
- Some of the editing capabilities are
such as; move or copy drawing
elements, enlarge or reduce size of
a drawing, make multiple copies of
a drawing, change units of measure
and etc.
3) Units and accuracy level
- CAD program allows you to work with
great accuracy. You can also work with
different units of measure, such as
architectural units, engineering units,
scientific units and surveyor units.
4) Storage and access of drawings
- It is quick and convenient to organize
CAD drawings. You can have thousands
of drawings on a computer’s hard disk
and you can open any one of them
within seconds.
5) Sharing CAD drawings
- The drawings can be shared by a number
of users, allowing them to coordinate
projects and work as a team. This is
accomplished by connecting different
computers via a network. You can also
publish your drawings on the Internet and
collaborate CAD projects using a web site.
6) Project reporting
- The CAD can be used to prepare project reports
7) Engineering analysis
- There is a separate category of programs called CAE that can use CAD drawings for engineering
analysis.
8) Computer aided manufacturing (CAM)
- CAM is a common method of manufacturing used by large corporations.
- These systems import CAD drawings into CAM programs to automate the manufacturing
process.

And that is our topic, the basic concept of CAD, I hope everyone understand
how CAD enables you to make quick and accurate drawings with the use of a
computer and used in different uses and presentation. Now to test if you really
understand our topic, please answer Task 2, and let us see how much you have
learned?

I What is more?

II What is in?

Good day! We are now on our day 2 of our lesson, this is a

continuation of day 1 topic about our lesson “Basic concept of
CAD.”

Today we will discuss about “CAD models” but before that let’s
have a short a short review quiz of our past topic, so let’s start!
II What is it?

Lesson 2: “CAD Models”

A CAD model is a computer representation of an object or part. It contains all of the design
information including geometry, dimensions, tolerances, materials and manufacturing information.
CAD models replace the paper blueprints and engineering drawings.

The simplest model used in CAD is a 2D model. This model is essentially the computer graphics
equivalent to an orthographic projection.

2D drawing in AutoCAD Orthographic Projection

Take Note!
Orthographic projection is a means of representing three-dimensional objects in two
dimensions. It is a form of parallel projection, in which all the projection lines are orthogonal to
the projection plane, resulting in every plane of the scene appearing in affine transformation on
the viewing surface.

A 3D model is the most general model used in CAD software. This model is equivalent to an
isometric view.

Two basic types of 3D models are wire frame and surface models.

3D wire frame model 3D surface model

Take Note!
In a 3D wire frame model, only edges of the object are represented.
A 3D surface model defines the object in terms of surfaces such as plates (flat) and shells
(curved) in addition to edges.
Use of solid model
a. Can be used for stress analysis, heat transfer analysis, fluid flow analysis, and computer
aided manufacturing.
b. In the manufacturing process to automatically generate machine tool paths to machine an
object.
c. To simulate the removal of material from an initial block of material on the computer
d. Can be linked to Computer Numerical Control CNC) machine to carry out the removal of
material automatically allowing many identical parts to be machined based directly on the
solid models.

…and that is our topic for today, I hope everyone understand the difference of
2D and 3D models, and their uses. . Now to test if you really understand our
topic, please answer Task 2, and let us see how much you have learned?

Lesson 2. Operating CAD Software and Computer Hardware

This lesson is to enable the student to prepare and to familiarize himself with the different things
needed in operating the CAD software and the computer hardware.

Some Technical Terms in Operating CAD Software and Hardware

Hardware - is all the physical equipment that makes up the computer system.
Software - is the set of programs and other related applications associated with a computer system.
Central Processing Unit (CPU) - is the brain of the computer where most of the “computing” takes
place.
CAD Software and Hardware Computer system can be broken down into two basic elements, the
hardware and the software.

THE HARDWARE

The hardware is the physical equipment that makes up the computer system. It is divided into
system hardware and peripherals. The system hardware includes the Central Processing Unit (CPU),
the keyboard, the monitor and primary storage memory (RAM), and the secondary storage memory.
Peripherals includes disk drives, mouse, digitizers, printers/plotters, etc.

System Unit – The main part of a Sample

microcomputer is sometimes called the chassis. Tower Type
It includes the following parts: motherboard, System Unit
microprocessor, memory chips, buses, ports,
expansion slots and cards.

The Central Processor Unit (CPU) – is the

brain of the computer where most of the
“computing” takes place. It is also known as
processor. It performs all instructions and
calculations that are needed to manage the
flow of information.
Sample CPU (Intel Core 2 Duo and AMD Athlon)
Keyboard – is the principal device for Source: products.yumecompare.com
communicating with your computer. All
keyboards have letter keys, punctuation
keys, and a space bar which is similar to the
keys on a typewriter. Keyboards also have
functions, numeric and arrow keys in
additional to Alt, Ctrl, and Enter keys.
Sample Keyboard
Monitor – it has a screen that displays information, such as the instruction you send to your
computer and the information and results your computer sends back after interpreting your
instruction. A color monitor will not display color unless there is a video card fits inside your
computer. The video card determines the screen resolution and the number of colors that the
monitor can display.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD) – it also known as hard drive. It is a

magnetic storage device that is installed inside the
computer. The hard drive is used as a permanent storage
for data. In a Windows computer, the hard drive is usually
configured as the C: drive and contains the operating
system and applications. Hard Disk

Optical Drive
Optical Drive – is a storage device that uses lasers to read
data on the optical media. There are three types of optical
drives: Compact Disc (CD), Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) and
Blu-ray Disc (BD).

Sample Mouse
Mouse – It is a small hand-held device used to
control the cursor/crosshair on the screen. It can be
used to select an item by pointing to it and clicking a
button.

Digitizer Tablet – is a graphics drawing tablet

used for sketching new images or tracing old
ones. It is also called a "graphics tablet,"
where the user writes or draws on the
surface of the device with a wired or wireless
pen or puck. Often, mistakenly called a
mouse, the puck is officially the "tablet Sample Digitizer Tablet
cursor."

Printer – It is an output device that

used to print information
processed by your computer.
Printers and plotters varies in
speed and output capabilities.

Sample Types of Printer

Plotter – an output device able to produce better quality
drawings as compared to printer, however the speed of
plotter is generally slower than printer.

THE SOFTWARE

The software is the set of programs, procedures, and related documentation associated with a
computer system. A program is a coded set of instructions that interprets the information given to
the computer with the keyboard or mouse and directs the computer to carry a task. Softwares can
be categorized into two main groups: operating system software and application software.

Operating System Software

The operating system software provides
various levels of interaction (called interface)
between the computer and the user, as well as
between the computer and the application
software.
Example of OS are: Window XP, Windows
Vista, Windows 7,8, 9,and 10,

Application Software
The application software also called programs, has a specific use or task to perform such as
AutoCAD for Architectural drawings and layouts, Lotus 1-2-3 for business and marketing, Adobe
Photoshop for image processing, and so on.

So that is our topic for today about “Operating CAD Software and Computer
Hardware”, I hope everyone understand the difference of between
hardware and software, and also about OS and applications. Now to test if
