Lapbook
How to make a lapbook:
Take a file folder (or a 12” x 18” piece of construction paper) and
fold each side into the center like the pictures.
Here is what the inside will
look like:
Use this page as a re ference when putting the lapbooks

together. The pieces are created to fit into these
spots.
Our Names
I like to incorporate picture books into my science and social
studies units whenever possible. Especially in the beginning of the
year when we are all getting to know each other, I love to use read
alouds to spark discussions about what makes us each special and
unique.
When we make the lapbooks, we do a different part each day.
Be fore each part I choose a book to read aloud. The first part we
do is the cover of the lapbook. Be fore this part, I read the book
Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and have a discussion about our
names. You can read this book or another book about names.
After reading this we complete the cover pieces.

Our Families
Every family can be different and

it’s important to acknowledge
that and discuss with students
that there are different kinds of
families. Read one of these books,
or one of your own, to spark this
conversation. Then complete the
My Family pocket.
Each student needs one of these My Family pockets. Have students cut out around the
outside rectangle. When they glue this into the lapbook they need to ONLY PUT GLUE AROUND
THE 3 SIDES AND LEAVE THE TOP OPEN FOR THE STRIPS TO BE PUT IN.

Give each student one of these pages and have them complete a strip for each family member.
They should write the family member’s name and draw a picture of him/her. If they need more
space they can write the name on the back and draw the picture on the front.

We are all unique and special!
The next few parts are about what makes us each unique -- the
way we look is just one of those ways. Here are just a few of the
books I have used be fore as we talk about our differences. Choose
one of these books, or another one you like, and read it to the
class. Then complete the Fun Facts About Me piece and choose the
folder topper that looks most like them.
Each student needs one of these Fun Facts f lowers. Have students cut out around the
outside of the f lower. When they glue this into the lapbook they need to first fold up the
f laps and then ONLY PUT GLUE in the middle of the f lower (the pentagon shape). After it
is glued into the lapbook, have students lift each f lap and write underneath it. I usually
have my students write first in pencil and then go over it in a thin sharpie.

Our Likes and Dislikes
I think it’s important to discuss how we
each have different likes and dislikes and
we should be proud to share the things
that we like -- even if they are
different from our friends. This book, A
Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon, is
a great book to read to go with that.
After reading this book I have the
students complete the Favorites piece.
Have students cut out around

the outside rectangle. Then
fold down the center solid line.
Next, students need to open up
the fold and cut along the
dotted lines, but stopping when
they get to the solid line. When
they glue this into the lapbook
they need to ONLY PUT GLUE on
the back so the f laps can still
open up.

Things I Like To Do
Choose another book from the books I showed about what
makes us unique or another one that you have. Have
students complete the Things I Like To Do pieces.
Students need to cut out the title piece and glue it on. Then
they need cut out around the outside rectangle. Then fold
down the center solid line. Next, students need to open up
the fold and cut along the dotted lines, but stopping when
they get to the solid line. When they glue this into the
lapbook they need to ONLY PUT GLUE on the back so the f laps
can still open up.

I just love the book, Stand Tall,

Molly Lou Melon. Molly Lou Melon is
a great character to discuss
differences and being proud of who
we are. She also has a talent of
balancing pennies on her front
tooth, so it’s a cute book to talk
about what talents we have or
what makes us a STAR!
Have students choose one of the pieces below and cut out around the outside rectangle.
Then they will fold on the solid line. When they glue this into the lapbook they need to
ONLY PUT GLUE on the back so the f lap can lift up.
