EEG FILTER
Aim:
To design a band pass filter to obtain the alpha frequency band of an amplified EEG signal.
Apparatus:
Resistors (68k Ω), capacitors (0.22µF), wires, mat lab software, CRO, printed circuit board, soldering
gun, flux
Theory:
Electroencephalography (EEG) detects alpha waves which are a type of brain waves, they are neural
oscillations in the frequency range of 8-13 Hz arising from synchronous and coherent electrical activity
of the thalamic pacemaker cells in humans.
Alpha waves predominantly originate from the occipital lobe during wakeful relaxation with closed
eyes. It’s reduced with open eyes, drowsiness and sleep. Occipital alpha waves during periods of eyes
closed are the strongest EEG brain signals. They seem not to appear until three years of age. EEG can
be used to provide the subject with feedback when alpha waves increase, enabling some individuals to
consciously increase alpha wave activity.
Alpha wave biofeedback has gained interest for having some successes in humans for seizure
suppression and for treatment of depression.
Alpha waves
The circuit used in this design is a RC band pass filter, in such filters the cut-off frequencies can be
accurately controlled by the resistors connected in series with a non-polarized capacitor. Sometimes it
is necessary to only pass a certain range of frequencies (in this case 8-13 Hz) that do not begin with 0
Hz, or end at some higher frequency point but are within a certain range or band of frequencies, either
narrow or wide.
By connecting or “cascading” together a single low pass circuit or high pass circuit, we can produce
RC filter that passes selected range of frequencies or “band” of frequencies while attenuating all those
outside this range. This type of filter is commonly known as band pass filter.
Circuit:
Design:
𝑓𝑜 =√𝑓𝐻 × 𝑓𝐿

𝑓𝑜 = 2𝜋𝑅𝐶
𝑓𝐻 =__________ Hz 𝑓 𝐿 =______________ Hz
𝑓𝑜 =

𝑓𝑜 =2𝜋𝑅𝐶=
Therefore,

Let C=0.22µ F,
R=
Choose R =_______________________
Procedure:
1. Rig up the circuit as shown in the circuit diagram on the PCB and solder it together.
2. Apply sine wave input signal of peak to peak amplitude of 2V.
3. Keeping the input signal of the amplitude constant, vary the frequency of the input signal. Vary
the frequency from 1 to 20 Hz, in increments of 1 Hz.
4. Note down the output voltage for various frequencies.
5. Plot the frequency response.
Calculations:
Gain in dB can be calculated using the formula
Av=20 log10(Vo/Vin)
Stimulated graph:
Result:
Thus the alpha frequency band is obtained for an amplified EEG signal using a band pass filter.
