Content Standard Addressed: Students will correctly identify shapes; students will identify shapes as two-
dimensional or three-dimensional
☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.
☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This activity and the technology tools used supports and enhances the
learning experience for students in the classroom by allowing students to show their learning by creating a
project. They get a chance to brainstorm, organize, make mistakes, and correct mistakes using this tool.
Popplet supports the Engagement component of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework by getting
students involved and letting them draw their own shapes into the correct boxes.
Lesson idea implementation: Teachers will make sure the students have a good understanding of the basic
shapes that are in the standards and students will listen and participate in the lesson. This activity will be
introduced by reading a book about shapes. While reading, the teacher will ask students about the different
shapes in the book and to draw the shapes in the air with their fingers. This activity will take approximately
10-15 minutes, depending how fancy the students get with their drawings of shapes. Direct observation, as
well as looking at their Popplet creations, will be used to assess the students learning. The final product will
be used to inform/differentiate learning by having students show their different Popplets and describing each
of the shapes they drew. To conclude this lesson, the teacher can have an open discussion about the different
shapes they drew and what their physical attributes were (how many sides, 2-D vs. 3-D, etc.). The teacher can
also ask students to look around the classroom and point out different objects that have different shapes. The
teacher should provide feedback to students about their work verbally. When looking at their designs, the
teacher can tell students if their shape is correct and if their shape is not correct, the teacher can work them
through the correct answer.

Reflective Practice: Using this activity could impact student learning by getting them engaged in their
learning. They are not only learning about shapes, but they are able to draw them. Another technology tool
that could further enhance this activity would be something like a paint app. The teacher can ask the students
to create a drawing using shapes they learned. For example, the teacher can ask students to draw a house
using these shapes and the students can describe what shapes they used and why.
