Challenges in Reading Comprehension
Difficulty is a term used to describe something that is difficult to do (Richard 2007) .The mistake or error
learning process of kids will reveal this. In reality, many senior high school students struggle with reading
comprehension on a regular basis. As a result of these challenges, the student does poorly on the
reading exam. As a result of these circumstances, some reading comprehension issues emerge. Internal
variables that impact students' reading comprehension are typically discovered by the reader during
reading, such as difficulties in understanding long sentences and texts, difficulty caused by a lack of
previous information, trouble employing reading methods, and difficulty concentrating (Fajar 2009)
Nearly 12% of students had trouble comprehending long sentences with intricate structures, which
indicates that the majority of students have difficulty understanding long sentences with complicated
structures. It accounts for 20% of the graded story's big sentences and 20% of the academic text. As a
result of this difficulty, pupils who are unable to comprehend extended sentences are unable to
comprehend the major concept provided in the text (Barfield 1999).
Students who lack reading techniques frequently struggle to comprehend the material. Students who
are unfamiliar with reading methods such as skimming and scanning will be discouraged and upset
because they lack the tools required to pass a reading comprehension test (Duarte, 2005). There are
several features of kids who do not employ reading techniques. First, the students read word for word
inside the text, depending too heavily on visual cues, which slows their reading speed and impairs their
understanding. Second, 15 of the students paid too much attention to detail, and as a result, they
frequently missed the primary point of the text. Third, they just paid too much attention to the form of
the expenditure meaning. Furthermore, pupils who do not have good reading methods may struggle to
pass the reading comprehension test. Fajar (2009) cites Mei-yu (1998).
Difficulty in Concentration
A psychological component might contribute to attention problems when reading. Students with poor
concentration will struggle to understand the text. It's much worse when the children have to take a
reading exam. Another explanation for kids' bad reading is a lack of attention, which is a necessary
component of excellent and effective reading.Reading with focus leads to comprehension of a text.
However, most pupils are unable or unwilling to concentrate effectively when reading (Shaw 1959).
