Running Head: DATABASE DESIGN PROPOSAL 1

Database Design Proposal

HIM-650

06/06/2020

A database design analyzes data that must be stored and identifies how these data

elements interrelate. Database designs are the core components of EHR systems since they are

essential towards gathering of patient health information. Information gathered by the

DATABASE DESIGN PROPOSAL 2

professional assists in key findings for improvement of patient centered care. This database

design proposal highlights a problem statement, users of the database design project, data

collection methods and procedures, significant goals and objectives, problems and barriers and

the project's value. The purpose of this assignment is to design and develop a database that can

be used to compile and report clinical data related to pharmaceutical products and utilization.

Problem Statement

Pharmaceutical drugs are essential towards delivery of patient centered care. With

development of technological systems in health care, clinical facilities and Pharmaceutical

companies work together to achieve a common goal of ensuring patients receive proper

treatment. Although the main goal is to ensure quality care, issues such as medical errors can be

very detrimental towards patient health and compromise a successful treatment. SGT. Rodriguez

had just returned home from deployment with a damaged knee. He’d been prescribed several

medications in Iraq prior to going to the Pharmaceutical clinic in his home town. His Physician

in Iraq transferred all his current health data, so the Pharmacist was able to easily have access to

his EHR. SGT. Rodriguez received his meds and went home without checking if he had actually

been given the right medication. Upon arrival at home, he quickly took out the medication for his

afternoon meds and realized he had been given another person’s prescriptions.

Development of this project’s findings is a collaboration between a computer science and

statistics team with a reconstructive medical team at a prominent health facility to make the

patient demographic analysis more accessible. The project’s major actor is the healthcare team

from the health facility. A digital model will be devised that works out well in planning,

preparing, analyzing, and recording how disastrous Pharmaceutical medication errors have on all

parties involved. Several terms are crucial in this study. We begin with a digital model, a

contemporary representation of a statistical or mathematical formula in the real world. Patient

demographics refer to the vital data analyzed in medical institutions. These demographics allow

for statistical analysis, which involves identifying a patient and categorizing the patient. Patients

can be categorized in various ways in the medical domain. These include; date of birth, gender,

ethnicity, blood type, contact information, emergency contact information, and significant

diagnosis.

Users

There are several targeted users of this digital model. The first crucial group is the

healthcare student's administrators who need to employ this model in their research and other

academic studies. Students form a vital part of a healthcare institution, and they study in the

institutions around the medical facility. The other users of the model include the information and

communications technology (ICT officers), inventory head, nursing department head, head of

medicine, head of the equipment department, and the security department head. The ICT head is

the officer who is in charge of all software that needs to be used within the hospital, and he or

she ought to be the first officer to learn about the model. The various departments are in charge

of all operations within the healthcare institutions, hence making them crucial users of the model

(Dimitrov, 2019).

Data collection

The ways that would be used to collect data necessary in conducting this research include

conducting interviews which involve going to the field of study and engaging a one on one talk

with the respondent to obtain the needed information. It is also essential to employ the use of

questionnaires and surveys. This involves coming up with questions that relate to the study and

constructing an exhaustive questionnaire that would be used to conduct a randomly sampled

group of respondents. Another crucial data collection procedure would be going to the field of

study and observe the outcome. Other methods that would be used involve oral histories,

documents as well as records and focus groups.

Goals and Objectives of the Database Design

The main goals of this study are achievable with proper planning and procedures put in

place. To commence with, one of the stringent goals is to develop a secure database design. One

of the significant setbacks facing database designs is cyber security, and therefore, curbing this

shortcoming is a long-term plan for the project. The project aims at establishing a database that

has its independence. For data independence to be achieved, it will be necessary to develop

software that will automatically analyze data to make the process effective. Establishing database

with faultless information is essential. Although this is a reasonably difficult goal since it

requires a high level of accuracy and efficiency, it is achievable thorough planning for every

procedure and step of the database establishment. The objectives of the project include

developing a database that models a real-world system. This involves choosing the best

simulation models that can model real-world problems. For instance, Monte Carlo simulation is

useful for this study. Another objective is a need to evade redundant data. Redundant data causes

the projects findings to have less efficiency. Enhancing data integrity ensures validity and

accuracy of the information gathered. This will be done by developing a design procedure that

effectively recovers, administers, and performs reliability of the recorded data.

Steps to meet the Goals and Objectives

To achieve the aspired long term and short-term goals of this study, there will be the need

to trail some reconstructive steps. The first one is to ensure the collaboration of all stakeholders

that are involved in the study. These parties and stakeholders that need to be involved in this

study include the healthcare team, computer Science team, and the Statistics team. The second

one would be to use data collection methods to obtain the correct data. It is imperative correct

data to be gathered to achieve the right results of the study. For these goals and objectives to be

achieved, there is a need to do various consultations to be sure about all aspects of the project.

The statistics team is the most essential in this part since statisticians can best ensure data

collection and analysis efficiency.

Problems and Barriers

The project will probably face various setbacks. The potential impediments would

include ignoring normalization, poor or lousy naming standards, poor planning of the design,

landscape complexity, limits on scalability, an increase in data volumes, data security concern,

decentralized data management, failure to protect data integrity, inability to use stored

procedures to trace or access data and improper documentation (Jeswani & Azapagic, 2020).

Failure to protect data integrity will come up when manipulations are done ignorantly without

proper planning. The problem of poor planning leading to a poor design will come when there is

a lack of unanimous consensus in the data collection and other procedures for developing the

entire project.

Value of the Project

The value of this project would be dependent on how all the procedures and steps are

followed. There will be a need to visualize the relationships between enormous data that will be

used in the application and come up with tables with these relationships. The overall value of the

project includes generating data that is consistent, eliminating redundant data, fast execution of

data, simplified queries, improvement of performance, and proper maintenance. The result of this

project's usefulness and feasibility would be establishing a database with faultless information,

creating a database that has data independence, and enhancing data integrity which are essential

towards effective results. This project’s findings allows for gathering data regarding impact of

pharmaceutical errors on patient health and treatment outcome. Gathering of data will show the

process of database design and how to uncover the many issues behind errors in Pharmaceutical

products.
