LET’S REVIEW

Do you feel inspired when you watch an adventure film? Have you thought of
yourself to be the Knight of Shining Armor protecting your little Princess?

Today, we are going to make a Coat of Arms to prepare you in becoming a valiant
knight.

So, what is this coat of arms?

Game Board (To be enlarged for group activity)

This is a word race. Below is a game board with numbers and shades (vertical,
horizontal, and diagonal lines). Along with this game board are markers that you’re going
to provide and number lots and cards with words written on them that will be provided by
your teacher. As the game progresses, the teacher will reveal these words to you.

One of you chooses a marker and places this at start.

a. The first player spins for or draws a number.
b. He/she moves the marker by as many spaces as shown by the number drawn or at which
the spinner stops.
c. The shade indicated at the space where the player’s marker stops gives the task to be
done.
d. If the marker lands in a word space, the player pronounces the word he/she has drawn
from the word cards.
e. If it lands in a sentence space, he/she has to use that word in a sentence.
f. If it lands in a meaning space, the player must give the meaning of the word.
g. If the board indicates spelling, the teacher draws a word card for the player who is given
the word to spell.
h. Correctly pronounced words = 5points.
i. Correct meaning = 10points.
j. Correctly used in a sentence = 10points.

Now, here’s the trick. If the task is done correctly you will have another draw for a
number and advance. If the task is wrong, you move the marker back to where it came from. The
one who gets the highest points win the game.

How to Make a Coat of Arms

Long ago medieval knights carried colorful shields. The shields were decorated with designs called coat
of arms. The symbols on a coat of arms described the knight’s acts of courage and bravery.

You can design your own coat of arms. First sketch a large shield. Then divide the shield
into four sections. In the upper left-hand section draw a picture of your favorite pet or a wild
animal you specially like. In the upper right-hand section draw a picture that represents a sports
or hobby you enjoy. In the lower left-hand section draw something that represents what you want
to become a scientist, a doctor, a teacher, a lawyer, an artist? In the last section, draw a picture of
your favorite flower, tree, or fruit. Your completed coat of arms describes you.

Can you make a kite of your own? If not, here are the steps on how to make a big beautiful
kite.

 First, get two bamboo sticks about two feet long. One must be about one and a half
centimeters in width and thickness. The other bamboo must be about 1cm in width
and half cm in thickness.

 Tie one end of the thinner bamboo stick with a string.

 Pull the string to make the stick bend and tie the other end. You have now a bow.

 Get the middle of the bow, fit it about three inches from one end of the first
bamboo stick, in cross-like fashion, and tie it with a string. Your kite skeleton is
now in place.

 Tie a string from both ends of the bow to the end of the bigger bamboo stick. You
can wrap your kite skeleton with Japanese papers or cellophanes of different colors.

 Do not forget to add wings on the two lower sides of your kite and a tail at its lower
end.

 Attach now your brand new kite to a pool of yards string and try to fly it. Kites fly
