Lesson 3 : context : the first Americans

Metacomet’s dream
During the European settlement of New England, the Wampanoags were very helpful to their new
neighbors. After Chief Massasoit died, his son Metacoment (Metacom) came to power when he was
only twenty-four years old. Metacoment soon became angry at colonists who punished Wampanoags
for trespassing. He felt that if the tribes in area united, they could overpower the settlers. Though
Metacoment’s forces killed hundreds of people, his dream of a union failed, as did his war.
