    The Social Dilemma

    In today’s time, the wide-ranging boom of technology is prevalent across the globe. Now,

    most of the people rely on its efficacious benefit and thus, become part of their daily routine.

    However, while others are enjoying its easy-going, hassle-free, and convenient features, little did

    they know how rampant the spread of fake news and identity theft on the social media apps and

    sites they were involved in. Recently, Netflix released a documentary movie “The Social

    Dilemma” which is about giving awareness on the dangerous impact of social media to humans.

    It is an eye-opener especially for those who use social media incautiously and those who do not

    filter the information they get from it.

    As a student journalist, I am aware of how worst the proliferation of unfiltered

    information on social media. It is pervasive, and some people are unaware of it. Also, identity

    theft rolled out. These things will only happen if people become oblivious about them. For me, to

    effectively prevent the spread of identity theft, false information, and fake news in the country, it

    will be through education. Educating their minds and giving them awareness can effectively stop

    the said problems. As a victim of fake news and identity theft once before, I realized that I do not

    have enough and sufficient knowledge about what I am doing in social media way back then. I

    set my information in public and made multiple accounts until someone made an FB account

    with my name and picture. I was frightened. I immediately report the account and aside from that

    I fed myself with the wrong information I got from social media. These kinds of things should

    not be taken for granted, as a victim I know here I am lack about, and that is proper education

    and awareness about social media. Youths must not limit their selves from learning. We must be

    mindful of what we post and share, what we read and see, and what we engage in. Also, it is

    better to hide our personal information and avoid accessing unnecessary links that might be the
    source of replication. And lastly, filter the information we get and have some further research

    about it.

    Education really plays an important role in giving people awareness about things. It is not

    too late to change our perspective on things like this, maybe we are already victims, but we are

    not just aware of it. Let us open our doors for things like this especially learning about social

    media because with just a fingertip we can never change the damage that has seen by the world.
