International business means much more business culture to learn. This is happening
because the culture all around the world, especially in other continents is different from each
other. Let’s say that the business culture in Europe will be a lot more different from the one in
Asia, or the one in American. However, even the nations in one continent can have some
different business cultures. For example like Germany may have a different culture from the
Czechs. Here is some example of the cultural difference in Europe :
1. German directness and love for truth might be considered quite rude in more high-context
cultures where communication is more sophisticated and veiled.
2. In Poland business and professional relations are characterized by formality, so address
with last name and the title is strongly recommended.
3. Russian people are not that formal and reserved, they call each other generally by
surname and a variation of father’s surname while hugs and kisses on one’s face are
considered nothing extraordinary when business relations intensify.
4. Serving lunch or dinner presents crucial importance in professional relations in France,
too as French people like to negotiate while eating.
Next, when discussing the business culture in the American continent, you can say they
(America – Latin) are quite relaxed and flexible about their culture. There is not a clear ‘no’ or
‘yes’ in their business culture. Sometimes, America – Latin people just let Americans decide
everything as they are okay with it.
The next continent to be discussed is the Asia continent. The Asia continent is quite hard to
analyze as they are so many countries with their own culture and uniqueness. Therefore, here we
will mainly discuss China and the Japanese as the nation from Asia continent. Here are some
cultures in China and Japanese about the business culture :
1. For both Chinese and Japanese everything is based on prestige and hierarchy, that is why
they lay great emphasis on the quality of clothing and luxury class of accommodation and
means of transportation.
2. Exchanging business cards follows a certain ritual, they should be kept in an elegant box
or case and always reached with the right hand or even better with both hands.
3. Unlike the European style slides should be overloaded with information, hard facts, as the
Japanese like to get all the data they need in one place.
4. Concerning small talk topics Chinese are far more personal than Europeans or Americans
are used to, not rare are questions about family, children, or one’s wages but if in China
avoid topics like human rights, politics, pollution. On the other hand for Japanese work
and business are before family and private life, they show in their jobs a great amount of
endurance, an essential quality in this country.
5. In both cultures giving and receiving gifts are usual but one needs to be careful about the
symbolic meaning of some objects.
The fact that every continent and every country have their own business culture means that
the international businessman must at least know what should he do when doing some business
in another country (especially another continent). The paper has to give some great examples and
explanations on the cases on these three continents. However, it will also be great if the paper
will give some tips also on what to do to know the business culture in one country or continent.
That will help a lot of international businessmen, in case they have forgotten the culture and
etiquette they have read overnight.
