About the play…

This short science fiction skit was first performed by lower
elementary students in the Fantasy in the Classroom
program through Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater in
Huntsville, AL. The class format was 5 hours of instruction
followed by a short showcase. One challenge these
students faced was a lack of interpersonal skills. In fact,
one student struggled with the idea of being silly or
“stupid” to such an extent that he would completely shut
down and have to leave the classroom. Therefore, I
purposely included silly moments that acclimated the
students to behaving in a silly way for an important
purpose. This was a very successful tactic. Doubling and
tripling is possible with this script. Additional tableaus
between the aliens and the explorers can also be explored.

The Explorers and the Aliens
By Mariah Beachboard

SUMMARY
It is a misty day in the jungle. Birds are singing, monkeys are chatting, snakes are hissing, vines
are swaying in the breeze. A spaceship has crash landed somewhere deep in this jungle. A
couple of guides lead a group of explorers into the jungle. The guides argue for a moment
about the direction. They split up the group. Group 1 crosses Down Stage Left. Group 2 crosses
Down Stage Right. Aliens creep Up Center Stage and start making gibberish noises. Groups
converge – stage tableaus Center Stage with different groups interacting together as kids
would. Finally, the alien teacher gathers her students to say goodbye.
