Breast Care Procedure
DEFINITION
Breast care is the process of cleaning the breast of mother that helps in maintaining hygiene and
prevent from cross infection during feeding .
PURPOSES
To clean the breast.
To detect any abnormalities.
To stimulate milk ejection .
To prevent local infection.
To prevent breast complications
PREPRATION OF ARTICLES
STEPS OF PROCEDURES.
Arrange all articles .
Explain the procedure to the mother about benefit of breast care.
Provide screen for privacy.
Provide comfortable position to the mother preferable sitting position.
Spread the mackintosh with towel over the lap of the mother.
then before and after the procedure we should Wash our hand to prevent bacteria contamination
Stand on the right side of the mother whole giving care.
Expose both the Breast first and check symmetry if they are the same.
Inspect the Breast for size and any abnormality.
there are circumstances that a mother has an
-Inverted nipple
-Cracked nipple.
and Retracted nipples,
or Any a sign of infection
then we need to Palpate the breast from superficial to deep for tenderness, pain, tumors,
exaggerated lymph nodes, etc
Squeeze the breast and observe the secretions.
after that Clean the secretion with the pad and throw In paper bag.
Take the cotton swab and squeeze excess water holding the tail and keeping above the hand.
Clean the breast in the following order—nipple-primary areola-secondary areola- total breast –lower
crease-axilla.
Dry the breast with gauze pieces/ a towel.
Cover the further breast exposing the near one.
then Inspect, palpate and squeeze in the previous manner.
Assist the mother to do hand wash for return demonstration.
Assist the mother to clean the breast in the same manner.
We need to observe if the mother learns from us, if the mother knows how to clean her own nipple,
areola and the breast.
and after we need to Record any necessary or any abnormality findings.
BATHING THE INFANT
Infant bathing is the prcedure and activity of cleaning an infant by bathing. It has been identify as
being fun, but care is recommended when an infant is in or around water.
THE PURPOSE IS To
keep the baby’s skin clean
To refresh the baby.
To stimulate the circulation.
To prevent any skin infection.
To closely observe the body for evidence of any abnormalities and to note infant’ growth and
development.
To induce sleep.
TYPES OF BATH
LAP BATH Bathing the baby keeping on the lap. Here the mother sits on a stool and can sponge
and change his dress on her lap itself.So there is no need of having additional stool.
SPONGE BATH Bathing the child in bed.
TUB BATH This is the common method of giving bath to the baby.
The ideal time for bathing a baby is before the second feeding;taking care that the baby is not
tired or hungry. Baby should not be bathed within an hour he is fed because moving may cause
vomit . There should be a fixed time for bath,which will help the baby to form a habit on an
orderly schedules.

Gentle sponge baths are perfect for the first few weeks until the umbilical cord falls off,
the circumcision heals, and the navel heals completely.
Explain procedure to the mother and encourage her Participation. To reduce anxiety and
to win THE co-operation.
Pour water into the tub and adjust temperature by checking with the elbow or dorsal side
of the palm. TO Prevents THE chances of hypothermia or scalding.
Undress the baby. To made ready for bath
Place the head of the baby on your non- dominant palm and support the body with the
forearm. For Safe and guards the baby from slipping.
Close ears with the thump and middle finger of the non- dominant hand. Prevents entry
of water.
Wipe the eyes from inner canthus to outer canthus with cotton swabs . It prevents entry
of debris and micro- organisms into the lacrimal gland.
Dip hand in water and wipe face taking care that no water goes into the mouth of infant.
Follows the principle less contaminated to most contaminated area.
Wet hair and apply soap or shampoo gently wash the scalp.Rinse with water and dry hair
with towel. Drying immediately prevents hypothermia.
Place the baby into the tub with shoulders neck and head supported by the nondominant
hand and the trunk and legs in water. To start washing trunk.
Wet the baby’s neck, chest,hands,abdomen, legs and perineum.
For cleaning back and buttocks transfer the baby to the other hand in such a way that
neck and chest are supported over the palm, by holding the baby securely.
.Apply soap concentrating on skinfolds and rinse with the water. Prevents skin irritation.
Spread the towel over a flat surface.Place the baby on it and dry. For better covenience
