CHAPTER 3
Starter:
What is a resume? What is a curriculum vitae? Are they the same or different? Give your
reasons.
Preparing a Resume:
Study the following statements about preparing a resume. State whether you agree or disagree
with each one. Then discuss your opinions in pair or groups.
ESP FOR ACCOUNTING STUDENTS Page 26
When preparing a resume you should:
2. (Agree)
Including a telephone number is very important so that companies are not confused when they want to
contact directly if there is additional information needed or to carry out the next stage of recruitment.
Including the address is very important because employers sometimes look at the applicant's address to
consider his trip to the office.
Some companies see applicants whose addresses are not far from their companies. This is noted so that
later applicants can work quickly without any reason for long trips.
3. (Disagree)
Using a friend as a reference on a resume can be used as an option that supports the statements related
to the competencies we mentioned in the resume, but this option is more relevant to use for fresh
graduates. for applicants who have worked before, it is better to display references of work experience
or supporting professional certifications. so the statement "Always use your friends as reference" is not
appropriate.
4. (Disagree)
Resume should display a list of work experience that matches the position we want. For example: to
apply for an accounting position, work experience as a graphic designer is certainly not relevant because
it cannot support our professional skills.
5. (Disagree)

A copy of the personal reference needs to be included if it matches the qualifications desired by the
company, if you don't have a suitable reference you should not need to include it because it is not relevant
6. (Agree)
The information contained in the resume must be factual. For example, information related to age,
marital status, and educational background. As an applicant, you must prioritize honesty.
7. (Agree)
Do not use an email address that is too personal. preferably, create an email account with a real name
for official purposes. for example, it is better to use the email address deviirmayunita@gmail.com
instead of devicantikbanget@gmail.com . because this will be flashy and seem ridiculous
• ….. Provide the names of three references who can be contacted by a prospective
employer.
• ….. Include your name and current address, e-mail address and telephone number(s).
• ….. Outline your educational history starting with your most recent studies.
• ….. Include other training and courses that you have taken.
• ….. List your work experience starting with your most recent employment.
Study carefully this extract from an advertisement for a job at a large banking organization. Then
study thoroughly the two resumes and decide which applicant is better suited to the job. Share your
ideas with other groups.
Responsibilities
• Work as part of a team to make ownership of all HR (Human Resources) functions within
the bank including staff development, training, and all issues concerning staff welfare.
• Maintain all staff documents, including contracts, leave, and sick benefits.

Discussion:
Study the script of the meeting of two people from the Human Resources Department discussing
the two applicants. What are the positive points of each applicant? Discuss your answers with other
groups.
Manager: Jane, what was your overall impression of the two applicants?
Jane: I was impressed with both, but for very different reasons.
Manager: Yes, I agree. Applicant 1 has quite a lot of experience – overall 20 years, but is a little
short in academic qualifications.
Jane: Yes, that’s true whereas Applicant 2 has an M.A. in HR, and a very recent one, as well as
an S1 degree. It’s very important to have up-to-date theoretical knowledge.
Manager: You’re right about that, but on the experience side, don’t you think she’s a little
weak?
Jane: Of course, but she’s worked at that mortgage company, which has given her some experience
on the financial side of things whereas Applicant 1 has had more experience, but in more general
situation.
Manager: True, but look at the wide range of responsibilities he’s had in very important HR areas
at management levels.
Jane: But we’re looking for someone who’s a team player and that’s probably easier for a person
who’s new in the workplace. I wonder about the flexibility of a person who’s been in management
for so long.
Manager: Let’s invite them both for an interview and keep these questions in mind as we are
interviewing.
Jane: Good plan. I’ll call them and make arrangements then
