FUTURE SIMPLE FORM AND USE

Form of Future Simple tense:


Future Simple is formed with the help of modal verb “will” and bare infinitive (verb
without “to”).

FOR EXAMPLE: I WILL be an English teacher.


You WILL go to school.
We WILL cook dinner.
They WILL buy a new house.
She WILL become famous florist.
He WILL be optimistic.
It WILL be sunny.

To make a Negative form we need to add particle “not”

FOR EXAMPLE: I WILL NOT be an English teacher.
You WILL NOT go to school.
We WILL NOT cook dinner.
They WILL NOT buy a new house.
She WILL NOT become famous florist.
He WILL NOT be optimistic.
It WILL NOT be sunny.

Modal verb “will” has short form in both positive and negative forms:

POSITIVE FORMS: I’LL be an English teacher. NEGATIVE FORMS: I WON’T be an English teacher.
You’LL go to school. You WON’T go to school.
We’LL cook dinner. We WON’T cook dinner.
They’LL buy a new house. They WON’T buy a new house.
She’LL become famous florist. She WON’T become famous florist.
He’LL be optimistic. He WON’T be optimistic.
It’LL be sunny. It WON’T be sunny.

A Question form of Future Simple with the modal verb “will”:

1. General or Yes/No Questions:

I a teacher? – Yes, I WILL. / No, I WON’T.

WILL they Spanish? – Yes, they WILL. / No, they WON’T.

Common USE of Future Simple tense:

1. On-the-spot decisions – decisions taken at the moment of speaking.

FOR EXAMPLE: As It’s getting cold, I will put on a coat.


(before I didn’t plan to wear a coat)

2. Fears, hopes, offers, threats, promises, predictions, warnings, requests, comments

FOR EXAMPLE: I hope you will buy a new smart phone.


I’m afraid I won’t do my homework.
I will always love you forever. (promise)

3. Actions/predictions that may/may not happen in the future

FOR EXAMPLE: He’ll probably bake a cake. (prediction)

4. Actions which we cannot control and will inevitably happen

FOR EXAMPLE: She will be 35 next month.

NOTE!
Present Continuous is also used to talk about future.
It is used for fixed arrangement in the near future – action that will definitely happen in
the nearest future.

FOR EXAMPLE: We are going to the cinema next Monday. (we bought tickets)
