1. Write an idea about indigenous materials.

Indigenous materials are naturally and locally found in a specific or place such as
bamboo, abaca, shells and etc. These are varied depending on the geographic features
and location of region.

2. Search an example at least three (3) of indigenous materials in different provinces of the
Philippines.

Abaca- Catanduanes is the biggest abaca producing province contributing 35 percent of


the total production, followed by Davao Oriental with about 8.5 percent. Due to frequent
typhoons in Bicol and Leyte

Coconut Shell- Davao Region

Bamboo- Basilig, Surigao del Sur

3. Recognize the different purpose and types of Indigenous materials.

Abaca- Initially used as material for rope, the abaca found its way inside Filipino homes
as a great material for furniture. It can be used as a fertilizer and is also good to the
environment.

Coconut Shells- can be used as medicine for skin problems. he shells can also be used
for making charcoal and coconut shell powder.

Bamboo- it used mainly in construction and is a viable replacement for wood.

Capiz Shells- used in the manufacture of lampshades, trays, mats, and bowls. In
developing countries, many kinds of bivalve shells are used in the manufacture of
jewelry and ornaments.

Rattan- used for a range of purposes. Can be food since some rattan species is edible
and especially in furniture process

4. Categorize safety practices in making indigenous crafts

 Safety glasses must be worn at all times in work areas


 Gloves must not be worn when using this machine
 Close fitting/ protective clothing must be worn.
 Long and loose hair must be contained.
 Sturdy footwear must be worn at all times in work areas.
 Rings and jewelry must not be worn.

5. Appreciate the richness of Filipino indigenous materials used in the handicraft making.

Build public awareness. This is ours and that will be our responsibility. We informed
ourselves and help raise the awareness to everyone. In that way we can know how this
will impact to our everyday lives.

Materials
 Abaca- closely related to the banana, has unique fibrous leaf stalks originally used in making
rope.
 Buntal fiber- The based of the stem is skinned and exposed fiber beaten with a bolo blade
 Capiz shells- used for thousand of years as a glass substitute because of their durability and
translucence
 Raffia-collectors go deep into the island to harvest raffia palm. They strip and dry the freshly cut
pale green strand and sun dry them.
 Lampakanay- a powerhouse grass with uses ranging from edible food source, medicine to
utilitarian application

Tools

 Stone Hammer- used as a tool for flattening items.


 Paddle Spade- long, wooden handle with attached paddle.
 Catfish Trap- used to catch freshwater/mud fish that were often raised in wet rice paddies/ lakes
by the Ifugao.
 Golok bamboo knife- Spearheads are portrayed as an impaling mechanism.
 Rodent trap- Used especially for mice or rats.
