EN BIO - Learning Activity 1 (Essay)

1) Biology is the scientific study of living organisms, their evolution, and includes humans. Studying biology enables understanding of life's complexities and beauty. 2) Understanding biology involves studying cells as the basic unit of life, and photosynthesis whereby plants use energy from the sun. 3) To determine if something is alive requires looking for seven key characteristics: cellular organization, ordered complexity, sensitivity, growth/reproduction, energy utilization, homeostasis, and evolutionary adaptation.

EN BIO – Learning Activity 1 (Essay)

Biology is defined as the scientific study of living organisms and their

evolution. So, Biology is all about living organisms from the tiniest to the largest
living organisms here on the face of the earth. That also includes us, human
beings. It is very important for us to study and learn about it since it also involves
us. Learning and understanding biology enables us to understand and appreciate
the complexities and the beauty about living organisms and life itself. In Biology,
“Bio” means life and “logos’” means study. So, we can say that Biology is the
study of life and life alone is important. Biology is the melting point of all the
information and tools from all of the natural sciences. Studying Biology makes us
understand the processes and the workings of natural laws.

Studying Biology involves understanding the cells. The cell is the basic
structure of life, in which also involves studying its complexities. In the biological
system, the sun is the center. The sun is the center of the biological system
because the sun is the source of energy. Energy is needed by all living organisms,
be it big or small needs energy to survive and thrive. This process is called
photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is one of the most beautiful and complex
reactions known in chemistry and physics.

Understanding the process involved in nature enables and makes us cope

up with the changing world and the problems that may arise along the way.
Nature is science and science is nature. These two concepts always come hand in
hand. Science has greatly change over time, it now involves multiple discipline
combining modern and traditional. Science involves different branches that are
multidisciplinary. Biology is the study of life. Chemistry is the study of the
composition of matter. Physics is the study of forces and motion. Earth science is
the study of the earth and its surroundings. Biology deals with the study of living
things that comes in all forms and shapes. People involve in the study of life are
called biologists. They study different disciplines in Biology such as Botany,
Zoology and Microbiology. So, in studying this course exposes us to the many
aspects of being a biologist.

The question now is What makes you “alive”? Some people would probably
say that “if it moves”. Some would say that “if it walks” and some would probably
that “if it transfers from one place to another”. However, non-living things can
also do all those things. So, how do we really know if a thing is “Alive”?

For us to be able to know or determine whether a thing is “Alive” or not,

we need to look for seven characteristics such as a.) cellular organization, b.)
ordered complexity, c.) sensitivity d.) growth, development and reproduction, e.)
energy utilization, f.) homeostasis, and g.) Evolutionary adaptation.

The organization of the biological world is hierarchical which means that

each level builds on the level below it. Starting with cellular level, atoms, the
fundamental elements of matter is made up of clusters of molecules. Complex
biological molecules are assembled into tiny structures called organelles within
membrane bounded units we call cell wall. Next is the organism level, in which
complex multicellular organisms exhibit three levels of organization. The most
basic is that of tissues which are group of similar cells tissues form to make organs
and organs group to form organ system. Then, we have the population level, in
which a group of organisms of the same species living in the same place form a
population and all population of a particular kind of organism together form a
species form a biological community. All of these forms together to create an
ecosystem. All the ecosystems in the planet complete the biosphere.

In studying all of these, we need to understand the Nature of Science.

Much of science is descriptive. Science uses both deductive and inductive
reasoning. Hypothesis-driven science makes and test predictions. In
understanding complex systems, it is broken down into parts. Biologists make use
of models to explain living systems. Scientists use word theory to explain natural
phenomenon and explains facts in an area of study. Lastly, research can be basic
or applied which could either extend what we know or seeks to use it in practical
areas.
