1. Calculate the length of the curve given by the position vector function
2 t
r(t) = t cos t i + sin t j + √ k , for 0 6 t 6 1.
3
If you use the Table of Integrals provided at the back of Stewart’s Calculus book make sure
that you understand how to derive any results that you use. Here you actually only need
the substitution w = t2 + 1.
2. Find the equation of the line which passes through the point (1, 2, −3) and is perpendicular
to the plane 2x + y + 3z = 4. Express your answer in the form
where f (t), g(t) and h(t) are functions you should specify.
3. Find the curvature of the plane curve with equation y = f (x) at an arbitrary point
(x, f (x)) on the curve, by using the parametrisation r(x) = xi + f (x)j.
One mark is given for presentation, i.e. clear writing and verbal explanations of logical flow.
Examples:
If any of these are lacking, your tutor will indicate this and explain how to improve. A “0”
mark is assgined for presentation if one of the above is majorly lacking, or two or more can be
improved.
