Tribes in
Cagayan Commonly referred to as Negritos, Agtas do belong to the
Negrito ethnolinguistic group. There are many Agta tribes,
scattered over Regions I to V in the island of Luzon
Northeastern Luzon, particularly Cagayan and Isabela in
Cagayan Valley, are the habitations of the Central Cagayan
Agtas..

Agtas are characteristically short, dark-skinned, kinky-

haired, thick-lipped, and small-nosed. Their traditional
clothing is tapis (skirt) for women and bahag
(breechcloth) for men. Breastfeeding mothers wear uban, a
piece of fabric slung from the shoulders. Most men scar
their bodies, using various designs that have been passed
down to them by their ancestors. Today, most Agtas have
abandoned their tribal attire for “civilized” clothes

Festivals in Cagayan
Sambali Festival
Sinabalu Festival
Sinabalu Festival
The Sambali or Piat Sambali Festival is celebrated
every year in Piat, Cagayan from June 23 to July 2. A
spectacle of color, form and movement and songs is to
be expected in this celebration, all brought about
centuries-old cultural traditions.
The Sambali festival originated from the Sambali dance
which is a war dance of the Itawis tribe of Cagayan
that was converted to Christianity through the
intercession of the Lady of Piat. It was revived in
1989 with the belief that it would promote the
identity of the people of Piat, as well as strengthen
unity and harmony among its people. Since then, it has
been an annual event for the residents of Piat.
Sinabalu Festival
This festival is celebrated in
the Malueg town by cooking
“sinabalu”, which is a
glutinous rice with coconut
cream cooked on bamboos and
roasted in open fire in the
town square. As in most
festivals and celebrations,
there are singing and dancing
presentations showcasing the
culture of Malueg. The
festival is held yearly on
April 25th and 26th.
Popular Foods In
Cagayan
Pancit Batil
Pancit Cabagan
Sinabago

Pancit Batil Patong.

Characterized by topping
such as chicharon bulaklak,
vegetables and egg. The
best with a mix of spicy
condiment with onions and
Philippine lemon.
Pancit Batil
Pancit Cabagan

Another variety of pancit, it has no such elaborate toppings like

that of pancit batil patong. There is a mixture of vegetables and
of course, I like the spicy condiment. What is noteworthy of
pancit cabagan is the serving size. In Cagayan, when you say
pancit, it is of no ordinary serving but expect a bigger serving.
One serving is equivalent to two or three pancit servings in
Metro Manila.
Sinabago
It is made of sticky rice inside a bamboo.
When I first saw it, I told myself that
bamboo had to be cut and be used just to
be able to make sinabago. Indeed, a labor
of love, one should try for himself
sinagago. I tried one and consumed it all.
One piece of sinabago is worth about 20
pesos, very affordable.

Callao Cave
is among the most frequented tourist
destinations in Cagayan valley. It features a
seven-chambered cave with stunning
limestone rock formations reminiscent of a
cathedral dome. One of these chambers
contains a stone altar illuminated by a
natural skylight. That gives the cave an
eerie catacomb-like experience. Then, there’s
the cave where millions of bats dwell and
another cave that hosts numerous red-billed
hornbills. One of the caves here also houses
the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat.
