1. INTRODUCTION

This report presents the structural calculations of the Central Laundry for Wakra Labor Accommodation
Located at Wakra, Qatar.
2|Page
The superstructure framing consist of Portal frame where the main beam is made up of Built-up section and
supported with composite column.
150mm concrete slab with metal deck was adopted for the floor system.
Isolated and combined footing was adopted for the foundation system.

The most important goal of any structural design is to provide a structure that fulfils the intended
function and safely supports the anticipated loads. Consideration of both strength and serviceability will
lead to the optimum structural design. Generally, the structural design of a project shall aim to:

a. Apply rational approaches to design, resulting in a robust and buildable structure.

b. Find the most cost-effective structural design.
c. Create optimum design that achieves the serviceability and durability requirements.
d. Incorporation of local conditions, materials and methods of construction into designs.
e. Integrated design of architectural, structural and service systems.
f. Clarify and completeness of the construction documents.

5. DESIGN METHOD

The design of structural elements for the proposed project will be based on the Strength Design
Method (Ultimate Strength Method) using different processes. The designs processes may be
used in the design are as follows:
 Manual methods to generate loads
 Manual methods to define the size of structural elements (Columns, Slabs, Beams, Walls, etc.)
 Finite element methods to design raft, slabs and walls

In order to account for concrete cracking in the distribution of internal forces on various
elements, reduction factors (stiffness modifiers) to gross inertia shall be applied according to
ACI-318-14 recommended values as shown below:

6. DESIGN TOOLS

 ETABS 2016
 SAFE 2016
 SAP
 PROKON
 EXCEL Spreadsheets for Structural Design.

7. DURABILITY:

7.1 Water Proofing System

 Foundation: Rubberized bitumen plus 1000 gauge polythene sheet shall be applied on plain
concrete blinding.
.

7.2 Fire Resistance

Structure will be designed for 2 hours fire rating. Cover to reinforcement shall be adjusted to
realize this fire resistance.

7.3 Design Life:

8|Page
The building shall be designed to have min building Design life period of 50 years.

8. DEFLECTION CRITERIA

Members subjected to flexural stresses shall be designed to have adequate stiffness for limiting
deflections/deformations that adversely affect strength and serviceability of structure.
Deflections calculated shall not exceed the limits stated in ACI 318-14 code as shown below

Note:
1. As per ASCE 7-10, drift due to lateral loads shall not exceed H/500 (where H is the story
height):

9|Page
For seismic load drift shall not exceed 0.02 times story height for structure
as per ASCE 7-10

Water Tank load Calculation:

Weight of Water = volume x Density of water

= 140m3 x 10 kN/m3 = 1400KN

Weight of the Tank = 50 KN

Total Weight = 1450 kN (Live Load)

Weight of plinth = Width x Depth X Density of Concrete

= 0.3 x 0.4 x 25= 3 KN/m

Linear load for the water tank on the supporting plinth will be divided in to 2 number
of strip since the edge strip will take have of the load only

Line load on the Internal plinth strip = Total load/(number of strip x length of strip)
= 1450/ (7*10.3) = 20.1≈ 22 KN/m

Line load on the external plinth strip =22/2 = 11 KN/m

ASCE TABLE C3-1

Typical 350mm THK External Blockwork:

150mm THK Block + 50mm THK Insulation + 100mm THK Block

150mm THK with 1 side plastered = (2.01 + 0.24) = 2.25 kPa

100mm THK with 1 side plastered = (1.05 + 0.24) = 1.29 kPa

350mm THK External Blockwork = 2.25 + 1.29 = 3.54 kPa

Linear Load = 3.54*(4.95-0.8) = 14.69 kN/m
= 20 kN/m (Conservative)
