Typically, when we dream, we do not know that the dream is not real. However, some people are able
to enter a dream and be fully aware of the fact that they are actually dreaming – this is known as lucid
dreaming. According to some research, around half of all people have had a lucid dream at some time in their
lives, and around 11% experience one or two lucid dreams per month.
Like most dreams, lucid dreaming will typically occur during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. For some
people, it occurs spontaneously, but some can dream lucidly whenever they want after training. The degree to
which a person can influence their dream also varies. Some people may simply wake up immediately upon
realizing that they had been dreaming. Many others, however, may be able to influence their own actions
within the dream, or different parts of the dream itself.
Lucid dreaming certainly sounds extremely exciting and even magical. However, does this experience
have any practical applications? Dr. Denholm Aspy, a researcher who specializes in lucid dreaming at the
University of Adelaide in Australia explained that being able to control your dreams is one way to help you
effectively avoid nightmares, especially ones that keep repeating.
Lucid dreaming also has the potential to help people with phobias, such as a fear of flying or a fear of
spiders. Lucid dream environments can give people who suffer from particular phobias an interesting
opportunity to do things like exposure therapy, where you gradually expose yourself to whatever you’re afraid
of in order to slowly overcome your fear, Dr. Aspy said. This is possible, he added, because these can provide a
person with an experience that is both realistic enough and completely safe at the same time.

B. Most of our dreams, including lucid ones, happen during REM sleep.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the answer to each of the
question.
Many business leaders obviously want to emphasize the importance of hitting financial targets.
However, it must be kept in mind that goals and results is not what motivates employees. It is what your team
thinks, feels, and believes about your organization and their work that will drive employee engagement and
positive behaviour, and engagement along with positive behaviour are exactly the things that lead to success
or positive financial outcomes.
Therefore, leaders who want to drive effort must first use their time with their teams to build belief in
the organizational purpose and the intrinsic value of the employees’ work. When Mike Gianoni became CEO of
the firm Blackbaud, he flipped the way meetings are organized. Previous leaders spent the majority of their
time sharing financial results, but Gianoni began using more of his time to discuss the impact Blackbaud was
having on customers. Six months later, they had an innovation breakthrough, employee engagement rose
dramatically, market share increased, and revenue grew exponentially.
“Shifting our airtime from internal metrics to customer outcomes jump-started the next level of
customer empathy and value,” explains Patrick Hodges, the president and general manager of Blackbaud.
“When people feel good about what they do and they’re more successful, they’re not going to look for another
job.” This is why during discussions and meetings, leaders should try to aim for 50-50 split between building
belief in the meaning and external impact of the work and talking about internal metrics and statistics.
Also, the more clearly an employee understands their direct impact, the more likely they are to go the
extra mile; they also experience greater fulfilment in doing so. Consider a research in which employees hired to
call for donations at a university call centre were divided into 2 groups: one group worked as usual, and the
other, before they started working, talked to a scholarship student who got an education with donations
produced by the centre. After a month, callers who had spoken with the scholarship recipient spent more than
two times as many minutes on the phone, and brought in much more money. Similar findings have been
echoed in studies of lifeguards, hospital workers, and sales teams. When we know our work is important to an
individual person, we rise to the occasion and try to do as best we can.
Helping the organization achieve success or hitting financial targets requires employees who are excited
and care about their work. It’s crucial for leaders to help their teams stay engaged, and you can do just that by
making sure you spend your time on communicating one simple message: Your work matters.
