7.3 Home Experiment

1. Did the volume decrease, increase, or remain the same after the balloon was placed inside the
refrigerator? What caused the change in the volume of the balloon? Explain. [2 points]

The volume of the balloon decreases after placing it inside the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
The decreasing of the volume is due to one of the gas laws namely Charles’ Law. This law states
that when pressure and amount of gas are kept constant, volume is directly proportional to the
temperature. To simply put, if the temperature decreases, the volume also decreases and vice
versa. Hence, the sudden fall of the temperature has driven the volume of the balloon to
decrease.

2. Based on the given values (V1,V2, and T1) from the experiment, calculate the final temperature, T2, (in
K) when the balloon was placed inside the refrigerator or in a large bowl with ice. Use the formula
!! !
"
= "" to solve for T2. Then, convert to ⁰C. [3 points]

3. From the temperature and volume values obtained, what is the relationship between temperature
and volume of a gas assuming constant pressure and a fixed amount of gas, is it directly or inversely
proportional? What Gas Law does this correspond to? [2 points]

As evidenced by the temperature and volume figures obtained, it is safe to say that the
relationship between the temperature and volume of a gas is directly proportional. When the
temperature rises, the volume increases, and when the temperature falls, the volume decreases.
And this is in accordance with Charles' Law.

7.4 Part A
1. What happens to the volume as the temperature is increased, that is, more heat is added in the
vessel containing the gas molecules? [1 point]

When the temperature increases, the volume also increases along with it.
2. Are there any changes in the pressure reading? If yes, is the change in the pressure very big if you
compare it with the initial value? [1 point]

Based on my observations, there are changes in the pressure reading, however, the changes
are not particularly large when compared to the initial value.

3. Assuming that the pressure is held constant and the number of moles of the gas is maintained
constant, what gas law best describes the experiment? [1 point]

The gas law that best describes the experiment is Charles’ Law.

7.4 Part B
1. What happens to the pressure as the volume is decreased? [1 point]

When the volume decreases, the pressure increases.

2. Are there any changes in the temperature? if yes, is the change very big as compared to the previous
value of the temperature? [1 point]

Based from my observation, there is no change in temperature.

3. Assuming that the temperature and the number of moles of the gas are held constant, what gas law
describes the experiment? [1 point]

The gas law that best describes the experiment is Boyle’s Law.

II. Application. Answer the following numbers in relation to the Gas Laws.
1. If you dive deep into the ocean, will your lungs be larger or smaller? Explain briefly in terms of one
of the gas laws. [3 points]

In correspondence to Boyle’s Law, your lungs will become smaller as you dive deep into
the ocean. Boyle’s Law explains that when temperature and gas are held constant, pressure
and volume are always inversely proportional. When you dive into the ocean, the pressure
inside your lungs rises, causing your lungs to contract, resulting in a reduction in volume, thus,
perfectly portraying the concept of Boyle's Law.

2. At constant temperature and a fixed amount of gas, if the pressure exerted is doubled what is the
final volume of the gas? Explain briefly your choice. [4 points]
a) The final volume is twice the initial volume.
b) The final volume is four times the initial volume.
c) The final volume is half of the initial volume.
d) The final volume is one-fourth of the initial volume.
e) The final volume remains the same as the initial volume.

If the pressure exerted is doubled, the final volume is half of the initial volume. Because volume
is inversely proportional to gas according to Boyle's Law, we can anticipate a decreased in the
volume as the pressure is increased. Hence, when pressure is doubled, we can safely assume
that the final volume becomes halved.
