Nat Chan Physics Progress Test Mock Final Examination
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Section A consists of 25 multiple-choice questions, and Section B and C consists of 3 short and long
questions respectively.
2. Write down your name and circle the correct class in the space provided above. Inappropriate names may
cause ZERO MARK in this section.
3. Answer ALL questions in 90 minutes. The full mark of this test is 100 marks.
5. Numerical answers should be EXACT or given to 3 SIGNIFICANT FIGURES. Marks may be deducted if
you present your answer in other ways.

1. In an experiment, John pours boiling water into a glass beaker. Suddenly, the beaker breaks.
(a) Suggest why the beaker breaks. (2 marks)
(b) After the water has been well put into another beaker, it has cooled down to room
temperature. In order to keep the water warm at 40 ° C, John puts the beaker under some
warming lamps. After half an hour, the temperature of the water was kept at about 30°C.
(i) Suggest why the water was kept at about 30°C. (2 marks)
(ii) Suggest ONE method, without changing the warming lamps, to increase the temperature
at which the water was kept. (1 mark)

(a) Sketch the path of the light ON THE ABOVE FIGURE from fish to the eyes of the cat. (1 mark)
(b) Find the height of the ground above the water level. (3 marks)
(c) Find the depth of the image of the fish from the surface of the water. (1 mark)
(b) Calculate the minimum length of mirror that the man can see the whole rod. (2 marks)

4. (a) An experiment is carried out to determine the specific latent heat of fusion of ice.
A joulemeter is used to heat up 50 g of melting ice. It is found that the initial reading of the
joulemeter is 26870 J, and the final reading is 43520 J.
(i) Why melting ice is used in this experiment? (1 mark)
(ii) Calculate the value for the specific latent heat of fusion of ice from this experiment.
(2 marks)
(iii) (1) Design a control for this experiment. You can illustrate your answer with
an appropriate diagram. (2 marks)
(2) The experiment is carried out again with this control. Compare the value of the
specific latent heat of fusion of ice with that in (a)(ii). Explain your answer.
(2 marks)
(3) Even if a control setup is used, there is still considerable error in the value of the
specific latent heat of fusion of ice. Why is it so?
(2 marks)
(ii) State ONE source of error, hence explain whether the actual value of specific heat capacity
of X should be greater or smaller than that of theoretical value. (3 marks)

(i) Give ONE reason why using prism is better than using mirrors in periscope. (1 mark)
(ii) What is the criteria of the material that can be used as prism in a periscope?
Show your calculation if there is any. (2 marks)
(b) Two mirrors are placed 90° with each other in front of an object as shown below.
Figure 5.2
(i) How many images are there if the angle between two mirrors is 90°? (1 mark)
(2) Sketch any ONE path of rays that the observer E can observe the image I 3 through
two mirrors. (3 marks)

(3) How many images are there if the angle between two mirrors is 60°? (1 mark)
(iii) (1) How many images are there the angle between two mirrors is 30°? (1 mark)
(2) If the angle between two mirrors is A, write down an equation in terms of A to
show how many images can be formed by the mirrors. (1 mark)

It is known that light can be transmitted inside the optical fibre effectively only when θ < 60°.
(i) Deduce the value of n 2 . (3 marks)
(ii) Find the range of values of n 2 such that all light entering the glass core (for ALL possible
values of θ) can be effectively transmitted inside the glass core of the optical fiber.
(2 marks)
Refer to the figure, which shows the cross-section of a schematic diagram of a diamond that is
laterally symmetrical. The diamond is placed in a position such that A touches the horizontal ground,
and BE is parallel to the horizontal ground. The angle made between the edge AE (and also edge of
AB) with the horizontal is θ, while the angle made between the horizontal line from E and the edge
DE is ϕ. A vertical light ray (ray x) is shone into the diamond from the edge CD. If the diamond is
well cut, ray x should also leave the diamond at edge CD, as drawn in the figure. The refractive
index of the diamond is 2.42.
Figure 6.2
(i) (1) Find the critical angle of diamond with respect to air. (1 mark)
(2) Explain why ray x do not leak from edge AE. You may mark on Figure 6.2 to define
symbol for suitable angle. (1 mark)
(3) State the condition on value of θ so that ray x also undergoes total internal
reflection at edge AB. Show your workings. (3 marks)

In the diagram above (Figure 6.3), sketch the path of ray y which is directed into the
diamond normally at edge DE until it leaves the diamond. Label ALL angles of incidence,
reflection and refraction in the diagram. Show your working on determining would the light
ray be totally internal reflected on each boundary. (5 marks)
