Bootable Devices
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Computer Systems Servicing NC II – Grade 11 Alternative

Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Bootable Devices!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

Lesson
1
Bootable Devices
The operating system is a system software commonly simplified as “OS”. An
operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages
the computer’s memory, processes, and all its software and hardware. It also allows
you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the
computer’s “language.” Without an operating system, a computer is useless.

Installation media (a USB flash drive or DVD) to install a new copy of Windows,
perform a clean installation or reinstall Windows.

What is It

INSTALLER PREPARATION AND OS INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

Boot means to load the first piece of software that starts a computer.
Because the operating system is essential for running all other programs, it is usually
the first piece of software loaded during the boot process.

The term boot comes from the idea of lifting oneself by one's own bootstraps:
the computer contains a tiny program (bootstrap loader) which will load and run a
program found on a boot device.

STORAGE BOOTABLE MEDIA

Storage Media is a device for recording (storing) information (data).

Bootable Media/ Bootable Device is physical media (CD, DVD, USB flash
drive or other removable media supported by a machine BIOS as a boot device) that
boots on any PC-compatible machine.
Bootable media is most often used to:

 recover an operating system that cannot start

 access and back up the data that has survived in a corrupted system
 back up sector-by-sector a disk with an unsupported file system
 troubleshoot hardware or software

4
PROCESS OF BOOTING

Cold Boot
To perform a cold boot (also called a "hard boot") means to start up a
computer that is turned off. It is typically performed by pressing the power button of
the computer.

Warm Boot

To perform warm boot (also called a "soft boot") means to restart a

computer. It is typically initiated from the operating system, rather than pressing a
button on the computer itself.

The Operating System’s Job

Computer’s operating system (OS) manages all the software and hardware on
the computer. Most of the time, there are several different computer programs
running at the same time, and they all need to access your computer’s central
processing unit (CPU), memory, and storage. The operating system coordinates all of
this to make sure each program gets what it needs.

How OS Works

5
TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEMS

Operating systems usually come preloaded on any computer that you buy.
Most people use the operating system that comes with their computer, but it is
possible to upgrade or even change operating systems.

The three most common operating systems for personal computers are Microsoft
Windows, Apple Mac OS X, and Linux.

Modern operating systems use a Graphical User Interface, or GUI

(pronounced “gooey”). A GUI lets you use your mouse to click on icons, buttons, and
menus, and everything is clearly displayed on the screen using a combination of
graphics and text.

Each operating system’s GUI has a different look and feel, so if you switch to
a different operating system it may seem unfamiliar at first. However, modern
operating system is designed to be easy to use, and most of the basic are the same.

6
Before GUIs, computers had a command-line interface, which meant the user
had to type every single command to the computer, and the computer would only
display text.

Microsoft created the Windows operating system in the mid-1980s. Over the
years, there have been many different versions of Windows, but the most recent ones
are Windows 10 (released in 2015), Windows 8 (2012), Windows 7 (2009), and
Windows Vista (2007). Windows comes pre-loaded on most new PCs, which helps to
make it the most popular operating system in the world.

CREATE WINDOWS INSTALLER USING FLASH DRIVE

Small portable computing devices such as Netbooks and MIDs (Mobile Internet
Devices) offer great mobility, but they lack optical drives (CD/DVD). An optical drive
is important when you need to install software from a CD or DVD. An external optical
drive would work, but you may not want to lug it around with you. So, what is the
solution? Use a USB flash drive as a bootable installation media.
An installer is a piece of software that is used to install software programs on
a system.

Installers simplify the process of installing software by providing the user a

step-by-step process with the ability to select the desired options.

7
Materials, tools and equipment

What You Need:

 A USB flash drive with good storage capacity; preferably 4GB or more.
 Access to a computer running Windows Vista or Windows 7.
 A CD or DVD containing .iso image of an operating system.

Notes to the Students

 Observe Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) while working

with the computer.
 Do not touch the pins or other connectors.
 Never eat and drink or smoke while working with the computer
 Check the quality of the work undertaken in accordance with
the established procedures

8
STEPS IN CREATING WINDOWS INSTALLER USING COMMAND PROMPT

Step 1: Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right click on Command
