Preposition Bingo

Aim
Do as follow-up consolidation practice to a grammar-focus lesson on verb/adjective plus preposition
patterns.
Materials
One bingo card for each student. Students must have a pen/pencil.
Teacher will need some kind of container to hold verb /adjective cards.

Explain rules of the game:

1. Teacher will pick, call out and write up verbs (e,g, apologize, choose, depend, etc.) or (participial) adjectives
(be happy, interested, surprised, worried, etc.) at random.

2. As the teacher calls out / writes up each verb/adjective, students write it in the box of a preposition it
can be used with.

3. Students can use “FREE” boxes to write in a verb/adjective and a collocating preposition if they know it.

4. The object is to fill one row of 5 boxes horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

The winning student(s) “prove” their win(s) by reading their collocations back to the class/teacher.
The teacher can encourage peer-checking by deferring to other students before determining the
collocations correct/incorrect.

5. In case of a tie, or as consolidation/extension, the teacher may wish to have (winning) students write a
sentence for each of their collocations. The student with no errors of any kind in any of their sentences wins.
