Cover Letter
To be honest, when I read the course syllabus at the beginning of this quarter, I knew
it would be a tough time. Writing 109ED is a journey for me since I have never done
any educational writing before and knew nothing about education. Also, you have
such high expectations of us that pushed me to try to do - sometimes that was more
than I thought I could do. I believe this can help to set a springboard to my later
success in the future.
As I mentioned I have learned a lot not only writing skills and principles, but also a
growth mindset. I firmly believe that intelligence can grow, and human qualities were
not carved in stone (Dweck, C., 2015). Struggles, mistakes, perseverance, and all
other experiences can increase one’s intelligence. No one is born smart, but we can
make up for it with practice. According to Dweck’s passage, people with fixed
mindsets believe that everything is preordained, people with a growth mindset believe
that man can conquer nature and that everything can be fixed. Dweck also noted that
different mindsets can lead to completely different results and behaviors. This is
totally reflecting my writing experience in this class. I still can remember the time
when I read the prompt of project one, I had no clue at all about what to write or even
how to start. But with lots of practice and reading, I became a writer who can do
formal writing and know much about educational concepts. So, trust me, you may be
temporarily bad at something. As long as you think you can do it and keep practicing,
there's nothing you're not good at.
Moreover, I am really thankful that Dr. Nicole Warwick fully protected our rights and
power in class, giving us time to do peer revision and group discussion. Like Freire
proposes in the book “Pedagogy of the Oppressed”, the problem-posing education
mode is beneficial to both students and teachers. Under this study mode, the teacher is
mainly responsible for explaining topics and theories, then helping students build their
own understandings. Teachers guide students to areas of study that require further
investigation and increase their knowledge by carefully depositing ideas relevant to
the topic (Freire, P., 2000). I have to say Dr. Nicole Warwick is an open mind teacher
as well and respects her students. Overall, an ideal learning model should be one in
which teachers and students respect each other, teachers assist students in learning
rather than just passing on knowledge, and teachers should protect students' creativity
and imagination.
In project one, I combined both reading about growth mindsets and the problem-
posing education mode together, then using my own experience while learning math
in class to prove how teachers’ aptitudes and my own mindset can affect the math
scores. In the group project, we proposed an after-school program to spread
mindfulness to students and staff of Hesperia High School. Our program offers
several activities to practice mindfulness, in order to treat and improve common
mental health problems, like stress and depression.
Back to the writing itself, I realized everyone will begin with a “shitty first draft”, and
only “very few writers really know what they are doing until they’ve done it” (Lamott
22). That’s why revising the draft is so important in later steps, and the only role of
the first draft is to pull out all the ideas that will be helpful to build the final version.
Therefore, I read all the comments carefully and do my revision on project one. I
specifically fixed the conflict and tension that change my mind on math. Then added
words about banking education mode to support my example.
