FOLDED PLATES-2

ASSIGNMENT 4

PRANITA SANJAY CHAVAN

FOLDED PLATES

Generally used in Temporary Structure which may be used

for homeless people, refugee camps, army base camp.

• There are many homeless people.

• Specially during disaster, many people become
homeless.
• We can use the concept of folded plate structure to
make portable shelter for the homeless people.
• Significant works on this project is already in progress.
• It is very cheap and easily useable by anyone. Recover
Accordion Shelter Light Weight Emergency Shelter.
• Folded Plates provide better stability to such structures.
Application Of Folded Plates
Roof structure

•Folded Plate Roofs are a type of folded plate structure that is

chosen for their durability and high weight-bearing capacity.
•Folded Plate Roofs are easy to assemble as they consist
of flat slabs or plates that are inclined in different directions and they
are joined along their edges at the top.
•In Germany in the 1920s the first Folded Plate Roofs were used in
construction of mainly very large factory buildings such as coal
bunkers.
•In United States in the 1930s the technology of Folded Plate
Roofs were used in the construction of warehouses and it quickly
became the preferred roofing solution for really large commercial
and industrial buildings.
Sheet Piles

• Sheet piles are sections of sheet materials with

interlocking edges that are driven into the ground to
provide earth retention and excavation support.
• Sheet piles are most commonly made of steel, but can also
be formed of timber or reinforced concrete.
• Reinforced concrete sheet piles are formed
using precast concrete members, usually connected together by
tongue and groove joints.
• They are commonly used in
permanent river embankments, canals and other marine
structures.
• The toes of the piles are usually cut with an oblique face to
facilitate easy driving and interlocking, while
the heads are finished off by casting a capping beam.
Floor Structure

• Floor Plates are used in Mezzanine floor structures.

• It is also widely used for Sound proofing,
• Mostly used in Cold Areas

Wall Structure

• Wall Structure made out of folded plates are generally

permenant structures made of Reinforced cement Concrete

Spacing :
• Shall not exceeds 2 times and thickness of plates
• Length of the reinforcements 80% of bottom bar should be
end to end support .

Advantages Of Folded Plate Structures:

• Folded plate structures very light form of construction up to
span 30 m, shell thickness required is 60 mm only.
• These types of structures reduce both materials and
construction costs.
• It has a longer span that can be provided.
• Also, has flat shapes by choosing certain arched
shapes.
• It provides better esthetical as compare to other forms of
construction.
Disadvantages Of Folded Plate Structures:
• Shuttering is difficult.
• Formwork requires more precision.
• Good labor and supervision are necessary.
