Presentation
Throughout the discussion, let us illustrate the measure of
position of quartiles, deciles and percentiles using the Linear
Interpolation. There are some steps that you may follow:
1. First, arrange the scores in increasing order.
2. Second, locate the position of the score in the distribution.
If the result is a decimal number, the interpolation is needed.
Steps in Interpolation
1. Subtract the 2nd data from the 3rd data.
2. Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in the
second step.
3. Add the result in step 2 to the smaller number.
Example:
Find the 1 st quartile (Q1), fifth decile (D5) and 80 th
percentile (P80) given the total number of infected person of
coronavirus in each month of Manila from Jan. 2020 to June
2021.

NOVEMBER 380
1. First, arrange the scores in increasing order.
-260, 270, 270, 280, 280, 290, 300, 310, 330, 380, 390, 400,
430, 450, 470, 500, 570, 670.
2. Second, locate the position of the score in the distribution.
Q1= 1/4(N + 1) D5= 5/10(N + 1) P80= 80/100(N + 1)
 The result is decimal number, the interpolation is needed.
=1/4(18

Interpolation =5/10(18 + 1) =80/100(18 + 1)

=4.75
=280- 280 (0.75) =9.5 (0.5)
=380-330 =15.2
=500- 470 (0.2)
=0 + 280 =25 + 330 =470+6
C. Developing Activities
 Activity 1 ( Individual Activity) Q1=280 PASS, SELECT, CLICK!
D5=355 P80=476
Direction:
 There will be a box to be passed to the whole class
accompanied with music.
 As the music stop, the student holding the box will call his
classmates. Then, he/she will be the one to answer.
Questions:
1) Data set ( 1, 3, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31 )
Find the 1st quartile.
2) The list below shows the test scores of grade 10 students
Find the 3rd decile.
( 18, 21, 20, 17, 15, 29, 27, 22, 28)
3) Find the 20th percentile the following set of data:
( 27, 29, 20, 28, 25,25, 23, 30, 28, 24)
 Activity 2 (Grouping Activity) Pop the Balloons
Directions:
 The class is divided into two groups. Each group will
choose a representative who will answer the Interquartile
Range that is being collected from the members.
 Every member should pop up the balloon to get the
corresponding data inside on it.
 At least 5 data should be collected to derive the
Interquartile Range answered by each representative.
 Allotted time would be given on each group to finish the
game.

D. Application Recently, we conducted 3 rd Quarter Portfolio Day it was held

at Javier National High School wherein the Grade 10 parents/
guardians had only few where attended. Through the data
gathered, you are to find the measure of position in the 1 st quartile,
50th decile and 75th percentile.

E. Generalization Direction: Fill in the blanks. Complete the steps on how to

illustrate measures of position of quartiles, deciles and percentiles
using Linear Interpolation.
Let us to illustrate the measure of position of quartiles, deciles,
and percentiles using Linear Interpolation. There are some steps
that you may follow:
Step 1: First, ___(1)____ the scores in increasing order.
Step 2: Second,____(2)____ the position of the score in
the distribution.
 If the result is a _____(3)_____ interpolation is needed.
Steps in Linear Interpolation
Step 1: Subtract the 2nd data from the 3rd data.
Step 2: ___(4)___ the result by the decimal part obtained
in the second step.

Step 3: Add the ___(5)___in Step 2 to the 2nd or smaller

number.
IV. EVALUATION Direction: Illustrate the following measures of position quartiles,
deciles, and percentiles. Write the letter that corresponds to the
correct answer.

a. First quartile c. Third quartile
b. Second quartile d. Fourth quartile
2. Deciles are the score that divide the distribution into how
many equal parts?
a. Two c. Ten
b. Four d. Hundred
3. What is the first quartile in the set 44, 21, 59, 64, 74, 57,
69, 38, 40, 27, and 81?
a. 27 c. 40
b. 38 d. 44
4. Using Linear Interpolation, what is the position of the third
quartile in the set 3, 6, 5, 4, 2, 4, 3, 2, 6, and 2?
