LO 03: Relate the principles underlying operating systems and system software
Introduction
The operating system is a very important subject domain related to Computer systems. It acts
as the interface between the user and the computer hardware. An operating system controls
the execution of application software and manages the computer hardware.
At present people use the operating system daily and we can find Operating Systems
everywhere around us. So there are multiple reasons behind the study of the operating
systems. Having a clear understanding of Operating Systems will help to learn how to
manage the computer resources appropriately. On the other hand, it will be helpful to solve
any problem occurring in an operating system.
1. What is an Operating System, What are the examples of the most popular operating
systems and their characteristics? (Take 5 examples) (20 marks) LO 03.
2. Describe the following mechanisms that are found in most computers related to the
CPU. In each case, state what the technique is, how it works, and how it helps to
improve the computer performance. (25 marks) LO 03
3
3. The main task an operating system carries out is the allocation of resources and
services. Explain the following Operating Systems functions: (15 marks) LO 03
a) Program execution.
b) I/O operations.
c) Communications.
d) Error detection.
e) Resource allocation.
4. Now a day almost all computing devices have the capability to process more than one
task simultaneously. What are the advantages of “Real-time Systems Distributed
Systems”? What is the difference between Real-time and Distributed Systems?
Compare and Contrast. (10 marks) LO 03
a) Kernel
b) Bootstrap Program.

Grading Criteria
Task (1) contains 20 marks.
Good
Student has demonstrated a very good understanding
and identification of correct facts with relevant
examples. And explained the practical aspects as well. 11-15
Excellent
Student has demonstrated an excellent in-depth
understanding, proper identification and accurate
presentation of information.
16-20
Well-structured logical answer is provided with the aid
of valid sources, diagrams and examples.
Learner has done research about the new technologies
related to the question asked and included proper
references. Harvard Referencing has correctly applied.
5
Task (2) contains 25 marks.
Pass
Student has demonstrated the information in a fairly
poor way. Some part of the question is not covered, but
it was seen that student has put an effort to answer the
given question. No in text citations.
6-12
Learner has provided a simple explanation of the task
and the answer is not structured, information is scattered
which showed that student had poor theoretical
knowledge and the application knowledge.
Good
Student has demonstrated a very good understanding
and identification of CPU in related to computer
memory.
Learner has made an explanation about the CPU 13-19
operations with their mechanism and the practical aspect
of them.
Good effort to make the answer more logical and
structured.
Excellent
Student has demonstrated an excellent in-depth
understanding, proper identification and accurate
presentation of information on CPU operations.
Well-structured logical answer is provided with the aid 20-25
of valid sources, diagrams and examples.
Learner has done research about the new technologies
related to the question asked and included proper
references. Harvard Referencing has correctly applied.
6
Task (3) contains 15 marks.
Pass
Student has demonstrated the information in a fairly
poor way. Some part of the question is not covered, but
it was seen that student has put an effort to answer the
given question.
Good
Student has demonstrated a very good understanding
and identification of OS operations.
Task (4) contains 10 marks.

Guidelines for Presentation
Clearly, easily readable text and suitable graphics (Graphs, Charts, etc.)
Font
The student needs to name the presentation softcopy with his/her name with initials
and the ICBT number / University number.
You are required to submit the soft copy of the presentation slides to ICBT SMIS.
The student will not be judged on “glitz and glam” on his/her presentation slides.
Therefore, students should not use too much animation or anything that will distract
the audience from the main points of the presentation. Pictures, graphs /Charts are
nice in order to demonstrate a point or show the audience what the student is talking
about but should not put in extraneous pictures just for the sake of having pretty
slides.
Page numbering.
Referencing and in-text citation should be done strictly using Harvard Referencing
System.
