Fresh Start

INT. ELLIE'S KITCHEN - DAY

ELLIE (16) Enters the kitchen, her MOM (40) and younger
brother, JACK(9) sit at the small table by the window. She
puts bread in the toaster.

ELLIE'S MOM
Excited about your first day?

ELLIE
What do you think?

ELLIE'S MOM
Come on, it will be nice to have a
fresh start.

ELLIE
(Sarcastically)
Yeah, a new school in a new place
where I know no one...sounds awesome.

ELLIE'S MOM
Can you try to be a little bit
optimistic? What about Violet? You
know one person

Ellie takes her toast out of the toaster and starts spreading
butter on it

ELLIE
I haven't seen her since we were like
five

ELLIE'S MOM
Just give it a chance...okay?

Ellie walks over to the table

ELLIE
Anything for you.

Ellie walks over to jack and gives him a side hug.

ELLIE
Have a good day okay?

JACK
I will.

INT./EXT. ELLIE'S HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

Ellie walks nervously through the parking lot. As she walks

she looks around to see groups of people gathered around. She
finally noticed a familiar face, her childhood friend VIOLET
(16) dressed in a flowy brown dress.

VIOLET
Ellie! Wow its been awhile!

ELLIE
Ah I know it's good to see you, I've
never been so happy to see a familiar
face.

VIOLET
Well, I'm glad you are here and I have
your back, I will show you the ropes.

Ellie and Violet walk up the walkway, towards the entrance to

the school.

VIOLET
So, how are you liking it here?

ELLIE
It's nice here, small.

VIOLET
Yes, definitely small...but like how
are you feeling about it.

ELLIE
Well I got to say its definitely not
my first choice to pick up my life in
the middle of high school to come to a
new place, but my mom wants a fresh
start without my dad so I am going to
try my best to make the most of it.

VIOLET
Maybe a fresh start will be fun. Plus,
I've been in need of a new best friend
so I am happy you are here.

ELLIE
Me too, I'm glad I got you.

Ellie and Violet walk into the school together, students fill
the halls. Ellie looks around at the groups of students
feeling lost and overwhelmed. Ellie and Violet walk to her

locker. While standing at her locker and talking Ellie looks

over at a group of attractive boys standing by the lockers
across the hall and begins to get distracted. Violet talks in
the background.

VIOLET
Ellie?

ELLIE
Who are they?

VIOLET
Ohhhh you like the lacrosse boys?

ELLIE
Ugh no they are just very..

VIOLET
Hot?

ELLIE
Yeah something like that.

The group of boys look at Ellie, whispering and laughing.

ELLIE
What is there problem?

VIOLET
Just don't worry about them they are
are stupid.

ELLIE
Ugh yeah whatever

One of the boys locks eyes with Ellie.

Violet drops Ellie off at her first class.

VIOLET
I will meet you back here after okay?

ELLIE
Yeah that sounds good.

VIOLET
Hey, don't worry too much, you're
going to be just fine here.

ELLIE
Thank you i'll try not to.

INT. CLASS ROOM - DAY

Ellie sits down at an empty desk and pulls out her notebook.
She feels a tap on her shoulder. She turns around to see one
of the lacrosse boys, CONNOR (16) from earlier.

CONNOR
Hey, I'm sorry about earlier

ELLIE
like 20 minutes ago?

CONNOR
Um yeah I guess.

ELLIE
Yeah its fine don't worry about it.

CONNOR
No actually I don't know what their
problem is.

ELLIE
(Annoyed)
I said not to worry about it.

CONNOR
Well I'm Connor by the way.

ELLIE
I'm Ellie

CONNOR
Where are you from?

ELLIE
California.

CONNOR
Why are you here?

ELLIE
You have a lot of questions.

CONNOR
Sorry I just...

The teacher starts talking and Ellie turns back around. The
teacher introduces the lesson.

The bell rings and Ellie packs up her bag, Connor walks past

CONNOR
It was nice to meet you

Ellie smiles at him. She grabs her bag and meets Violet
outside the classroom. They walk together to their next
class.

VIOLET
Did you meet anyone during your class?

ELLIE
Not really, that guy Connor tried to
talk to me.

VIOLET
Really! He's cute.

ELLIE
I guess but him and his friends soon
douchy. I'm not really interested.

VIOLET
Yeah that's true, a lot of girls would
die to talk to him though.

ELLIE
He just isn't really my type.

INT. ENGLISH CLASSROOM - DAY

Ellie and Violet walk into the english classroom and sit down
at two desks next to each other. Ellie immediately notices a
boy, he is dressed in black sitting alone a few desks over.
he begins to stare, then turns to Violet

ELLIE
Who is that??

VIOLET
Who?

ELLIE
him

Ellie points at the boy.

VIOLET
Oh, Sawyer?

ELLIE
Yeah, what's his deal?

VIOLET
I'm not sure, he doesn't talk much or
to many people. Why do you like him?

ELLIE
Uh no, I mean I don't know

VIOLET
Good luck with that one, I havent seen
him talk to many girls.

ELLIE
I have to focus on myself and getting
adjusted here anyways.

The teacher starts class.

ENGLISH TEACHER
Today we are patnering up. I have
created random partners, so go check
the board and we will start the
assigment.

Ellie gets up to check who her partner is. She looks down the
list until she sees her name next to sawyers. She walks over
and sits next to SAWYER(16).

ELLIE
Hi I'm Ellie, we're partners

SAWYER
I havent seen you here before

ELLIE
Um yeah I just moved here

SAWYER
Nice. You have pretty eyes

Ellie looks up and smiles

ELLIE
Thank you.

SAWYER
Im glad were partners

Ellie and Sawyer look over the assignment.

Ellie and Violet walk out of class

VIOLET
So, what did you think about Sawyer?

ELLIE
He seems cool...he complimented my
eyes.

VIOLET
Thats more then I've ever heard him
say

ELLIE
He seems really cool.

INT. ELLIE'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Ellie's mom walks into the room and sits down next to Ellie
on the couch.

ELLIE'S MOM
So, how was it?

ELLIE
How was what?

ELLIE'S MOM
Your first day?

ELLIE
Oh. Actually it was pretty good.

ELLIE'S MOM
See I told you! Who did you meet?

ELLIE
I spent most of the day with Violet,
shes actually really cool!

ELLIE'S MOM
I knew you were going to like it here.

ELLIE
Yeah I guess

Eh there were a few.

INT. ELLIE'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Ellie lays on her bed listening to music. She picks up her

computer and searches Sawyer on social media. She hears her
phone buzz and picks it up to see a message from Conner,
reading "Hey Ellie" she looks at her phone and sets it back
down without responding. She scrolls through Sawyers pictures
before closing her computer. She lays there thinking of
Sawyer and falls asleep.
