Wetland and Ornithology Research Center
Wetland and Ornithology Research Center
India has a wealth of wetland ecosystems that support diverse and unique habitats. These
wetlands provide numerous ecological goods and services but are under tremendous stress
due to rapid urbanization, industrialization and agricultural intensification, manifested by the
shrinkage in their areal extent, and decline in the hydrological, economic and ecological
functions they perform. Wetland performs numerous valuable function such as recycle
nutrients, purify water, attenuate floods, recharge ground water and also serves in providing
drinking water, fish, fodder, fuels, wildlife habitat, control rate of runoff in urban areas, buffer
shorelines against erosion and recreation to society. Due to anthropogenic activities and
urbanization, they have been declining at an alarming rate. An ornithology center came into
being at a time when the twin issues, namely the sustainable use and conservation of
natural resources figured in the global agenda.
AIM
Creating a symbiotic campus which acts as an integrated space for education and
research of wetlands with ornithology along with other spaces where people come
to know about the importance of wetland and its fauna, and make them experience
the presence of birds.
OBJECTIVES
To create a center which would include both recreational and research facility
and provide a symbiotic environment.
To design and conduct research on wetlands and its fauna (ornithology) covering
all aspects of biodiversity and natural history.
To maintain and preserve the growth of marshland and birds.
THESIS STATEMENT
To provide a space where the scientists and scholars study about birds and other
natural beings be in the same atmosphere. A center which can support the betterment
of the nature.
PROJECT SCOPE
There has always been a tangible and intangible connection between natural
ecosystems, culture, science, and livelihood. Nature and forests profoundly influence
human consciousness and society. The goal is to be sensitive towards the regional
context while designing stable structures. The design seeks avenues for interactive
and educational exhibits. Most importantly, the project should reflect what it preaches.
The center's main objective is to move close to nature and not far away by strict
boundaries, to develop a balance by merging innovation, creativity, and natural
topography.
SITE INTRODUCTION
Point Calimer Wetland area is much enriched with the presence of different species of flora
and fauna. But due to human interventions during past few decades the number of birds in the
area has reduces gradually. So having a center for study and research birds in their
atmosphere will help the scholars working in this field. Directly or indirectly, it can help to
bring back the lost eco balance over this area.
This site has recorded the second largest congregation of migratory waterbirds in India, with a
peak population in excess of 100,000, representing 103 species. Bombay Natural History
Society researchers have captured, studied, ringed and released over 200,000 birds during the
course of several ornithological studies here in the past several years.
