Ice Caps
About the Work:
Global ice loss has increased rapidly over the past two decades, and
scientists are still uncovering how much the loss of these ice caps will
affect our future. As ice disappears, we experience an incredible rise in sea
levels that has the potential to impact over 40% of our world’s population.
In addition to this, extreme weather changes and the melting of
permafrost present extreme dangers to our planet.
Ice Caps takes an exploratory look at this impact through music and pitch.
Utilizing the set class 014567, this composition symbolizes the breaking of
and reforming of ice. Each movement is represented by three members of
the set class until the finale where the set class is in its full form as a unified
ice cap. As performers and audience members alike engage with this
work, they will be presented with a musical story resembling once unified
ice caps slowly separating and, with reflection and action, becoming
unified once again. The end of this work is open to interpretation for what
the future of the environment will be.
