CHAPTER – 1

full and the same members of society. Educating and creating awareness among women. Support the

knowledge and understanding of gender relations and the ways these relations may be changed.
Women empowerment is very important for the development of society.
Women empowerment is empowering the women to take their own decisions for their personal
development as well as social development. Empowerment of women would mean encouraging
women to be self-support, independent, have positive self –esteem, generate confidence to face any
difficult situation and active participation in various activity, in the ancient time, women were
treated very badly by family and society. They were not given education and were only restricted to
doing household task. Women empowerment is very necessary, there are various ways in how one
can empower women, the individuals and government must both come together to make it happen.
Education for girls must be made compulsory that women can become literate to make a life for
themselves.
Women must be given equal opportunities in every field, irrespective of gender moreover, they must
also be given equal pay. We can also empower women by eliminating child marriages in India ,
which is commonly conducted in village areas.
Women empowerment the reality is still not encouraging as many women are not yet empowered
and do not have any power of freedom take decisions spend their own money in the way they
wanted, various programs must be conducted where they can be given the ability to defend
themselves in case they face financial crises.
Empowerment of women in rural as well as urban Increase the income levels of women by
engaging them in income –generating activities and creating financial stability. Women
empowerment refers to increasing and improving the social, economic, political and legal strength of
the women, to ensure equal-right to women and to make them confident enough to claim their rights
such as;
Freely live their life with a sense of self-worth, respect and dignity, have equal rights to participate
in social, religious and public activities, have equal social status in the society, have equal right for
social and economic justice. Determine financial and economic choices, get equal opportunity for
education and employment without any gender bias and get safe and comfortable working
environment.

Women empowerment has taken a center stage in today agenda while acknowledging that women
has a role to play in economic growth .Financial involvement has been as boost quest to boost to
growth and development of the economy, most programs had been embarked on in support of
women empowerment and support to business start ups of women groups.
When a women empowered it does not mean that another individual becomes powerless or is having
less power. If a women is empowered her competencies towards decision-making will surely
influence her family's behavior.
Income-generated women’s activities give women better economic status. Economic status, through
empowerment gives way to social status and lead to women’s inclusion in national construction and
economic development. There are many variables for push viz. Insufficient family income,
dissatisfaction with salaried work, difficulty finding responsibilities for work and family etc… and
the pull factors directly attract to start their own business.
Women empowerment means creation of an environment where women can make independent
decision on their personal development as well as society. Encouraging women to be self reliant, self
esteem, generating confidence to face any difficult situation.
Women empowerment define as is the ability of women exercise full control over one’s actions and
their ability to influence the social change to create more just social and economic order nationally
and internally.
NGO- Non governmental organizations the main aim is to promoting female entrepreneurship and
also implementing special programmes for the holistic development and women empowerment and
playing a important role towards women empowerment and they help to many individual women to
set up their own business by providing all the basic education, training, and self awareness programs.
They are mainly concerned with upliftment of the women in the society, some NGOs provide
necessary financial guidance as well.
In this way they help women to come out with their unique ideas and to benefit from reaching the
community. They provide various opportunities to stand on their own feet and be self employed
,Many NGOs also provide them with basic needs.
There are some of the NGOs promoting women empowerment through entrepreneurship with out
expecting any profit and the only purpose is to encourage the women to start their own business, to
live a financially stable life and independent. Some NGOs working towards women empowerment
given below;
Women empowerment is several ways to categorized into five parts that is given below;
Socially empowerment
Socially empowerment including education, employment, health and service etc… equal
access to education and giving them identity and community. Increase the self determination
in people.
Educationally empowerment
Educationally empowerment means empowering through education can be one of the
amazing feelings. Empowering female with the knowledge, skills and self confidence to
participate in the development process.
Economically
Women can increase their right to economic resources and power to take their own decision
that advantages for themselves.
Politically empowerment
Politically empowerment means giving equal rights to participation, representation and
leadership of women within government. increasing the awareness regarding the rights of an
employee.
Psychologically empowerment
Decision making, capacity and positive self evaluation and having a capacity to regulate her
own life as a person and not as a constructed.
Women are facing lots of problems in their daily life even after they are given equal rights and
opportunities.

It is the women’s business association, which is entirely dedicated to the growth of Entrepreneurship
it is established in 1983,AWAKE in New York. Women’s World Banking affiliate, AWAKE has
touched the lives of thousands of women in Karnataka and has provided inspiration and technical
support to countless first generation women entrepreneurs to being their own work from small-scale
and also exempt from tax under section 12A and 80G of India’s income tax act.
AWAKE is play a very vital role towards women empowerment by providing basic education,
vocational training, training for self-employment, protection for women and self- awareness
programs. Thus they are mainly concerned with the up lift met of the women in the society.
In 1984, AWAKE started with business counseling as its main service offered to be expecting
women entrepreneurs. Women entrepreneurs were enrolled as members of AWAKE. Over the years,
Entrepreneurship development training was offered including of awareness programs,
entrepreneurship development program and skill development trainings and workshops. AWAKE
extended its services as a support agency by organizing conferences and networking platforms for its
members and thereby enhanced their growth. become a portal for exchange of information that lead
to the establishment of research and resource centre.
Women entrepreneurs faced lots of problems at start-up as well as operating stage like, non-
availability of finance and having to perform dual role one at work and other at home. Technological
advancement and information technology study have reduced the problem of women entrepreneurs.
There is essential for changing the mindset towards women so as given equal rights. The progress
towards gender equality is slow and is partly due to the failure to attach money to policy
commitments. In the words of president...
APJ ABDUL KALAM -" Empowering women is a prerequisite for creating a good nation,
when women are empowered, society with stability is assured. Empowerment of women is
essential as their thoughts and their value systems lead to the development of a good family,
good society and ultimately a good nation."
AWAKE works on the Entrepreneur guiding Entrepreneur approach, which means the company take
in a pool of women entrepreneurs from several sectors as its members who contribute their time and
expertise to support women entrepreneurs.
The organization conducting awareness programs, business counseling, trainings, skill development,
information spreading and networking, marketing assistance, credit referral and policy advocacy.
Women’s entrepreneurs from different backgrounds can get additional benefit from support provided
by AWAKE.

empowerment to bring changes and also they given training, basic awareness, basic education and
development programs. More concentrate about women empowerment and entrepreneurs they made

making in her family. Now the situation has been changed. She is given freedom what she wishes.
In today’s scenario more women are busy in income generating activities. This is because of NGO
and other financial institution came forward to give microfinance to poor women. They believe that
a women is the small credit risk and often benefits the whole family. The main aim of AWAKE is
to empower women.
This is why women empowerment is need to empower women to speak for themselves and to take
decision on their own.
CHAPTER – 2
To study the different programs, schemes planned by AWAKE to empower the women.

To study the motivational factor make women entrepreneurs.
The scope of the study is to find out women empowerment, measured by income generation, women
employability and economic development, through AWAK and to find out level of awareness of
these AWAKE among the women.

The study focuses on general study of secondary data collected from various research papers,
journals, books, articles, company website, company records, published reports and other available
sources.
The collected data will be analyzes with help of Microsoft excel tools, statistical analysis and
present the results through graphs, diagrams, pie charts and table.
The study in confined to Bengaluru city only so its not applicable to other areas,

Based on the study conducted the followings have been the findings;
AWAKE has many women entrepreneurs who are started business in various field.
Most of the women entrepreneurs have absence of awareness about AWAKE .
Most of them Lack of access to finance, technology constrains, environmental and social
issues.
Women entrepreneurs faced lots of complication at start-up as well as operating stages.
Majority of the women entrepreneur doesn’t get family support.
The services of AWAKE are extended to female self help group, NGOs and other
development agencies involved in income generation and entrepreneurship development
activities.
AWAKE organize awareness programmes, business advice, training, skill development,
mentoring and credit referral.
Having dual role one at home and other at work.
4.2 SUGGESTION
The top level management thereby needs to monitor the strategies and make necessary
modifications whenever required.
AWAKE should more focus on rural areas.

This project study has helped me to learn and experience many aspects as detailed below;

From the finding of the present study conclude that women empowerment is one the big issue facing
by India it is most important to create awareness and understanding of the problem of women’s
employment in all the top policy and decision making and take strategic steps to develop and help
women. The greatest need of the hour is change of social attitude to women. Gender equality and
women empowerment is two boundary of the same coin and make changes in society, political,
legislatures and the judicial system in order to support and awareness, understanding and action.
women run their enterprise in a variety of areas like food processing, tailoring unit, beauty parlors,
garments and others. In 21st century the participation of women in all fields more and more specially
with in the field of entrepreneurship is growing. Women empowerment is very important idea for
development of rural and urban areas. Entrepreneurship can create new economic opportunities for
women and contribution to overall growth and leaving from poverty.
