III. Procedure

A. ACTIVITY
1. Motivation (IN ACTION!)
Show the following pictures (supported each by a sentence) to the students and ask them to
identify the verb in the sentence. Ask someone to volunteer to read the verb in the sentence and
spell it out correctly in front of the class.

Picture 1: The Dumangas NHS conducted its first virtual flag raising ceremony this year.
Picture 2: The parents and guardians went to respective barangay gymnasium to enrol their child.
Picture 3: The teachers spent hours sorting the self-learning modules.
Picture 4: The Grade 7 advisers prepared the envelopes of learners a day before the distribution.
 Ask the students the following questions:
1. What are the words that you have written on the board?
2. What events do these verbs talk about? Present or past?
3. How did you come up to your answer that these verbs are in their past form?
4. Can you enumerate the words used in each sentence that tell us that the events on the
picture really happened in the past?
5. Which two verbs do you think have something in common? How about the other two?
 Ask the students to read again the words written on the board using correct pronunciation
and stress.
2. Presentation
 Present the lesson objectives in the class.
Activity 1 (ATTENTION PLEASE!)
Instruct the students to watch and listen carefully to the recorded powerpoint presentation
about the simple past tense of the verb.
After the watching and listening to the recorded powerpoint presentation, ask them the
following questions:
1. What are the uses of the simple past tense of the verb?
2. What are the regular verbs? How about irregular verbs?
Activity 2(LET’S TRY THIS!)
Direction: Complete this short report on Gabriela Silang by giving the correct form of the
verb in the parentheses.

Gabriela Silang (be)_____ the first Filipino woman general. When her husband Diego
Silang (die)______, she (lead) ______ his troops and (continue) __________ to fight against the
Spaniards. She (wage) _______ successful guerilla warfare against Spanish garrisons. In 1763,
the Spaniards (capture) _________ her and her 80 men. They (hang) ______ her on September
20, 1763. Filipinos should be proud of Gabriela Silang because she bravely (fight) ________ and
(die) for the freedom of the country that she so (love) ______.

 Ask the students to read the passage again in chorus, this time by using the correct form of
the verbs.

B. Analysis
Ask the following questions:
o How do you find the activity?
o What are the difficulties you encountered in your group as you do the activity?
o How did you easily identify the irregular verbs used in the passage?
o How is the simple past tense used in utterances?

C. Abstraction
 Ask the following questions:
o What have you learned from the previous activities?
o When do we use the simple past tense of the verb?
o Differentiate regular from irregular verb.
 Give additional inputs and/or clarification in learning the topic.
D. Application
Activity 4 (ODD ONE OUT!)
Using the prepared interactive slideshow, ask a student to come forward and find the regular
verb from the given choices.
1. awake, become, bite, crash
2. read, play, see, tear
3. hurt, kneel, ask, lead
4. swim, teach, drink, obey
5. break, talk, ride, meet
Activity 5 (PICK THAT PAPER STRIP!)
Ask a student to volunteer and pick out a rolled paper strip on a box. Ask him/her to read
the sentence written on the paper strip and ask him to read it again, this time by changing the verb
into its simple past tense.
1. We move to a new house.
2. She bring a cup of coffee.
3. He doesn’t do the homework.
4. The sell cars.
5. The girls visit their friends.

IV. Assessment
The Manobos are the second largest group of our tribal brothers and sisters. They are found
living in scattered settlements mainly in Bukidnon, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato, Davao del Sur,
Davao del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, and Surigao.

Let us go back to the distant past and learn what the ancient Manobos did for a living.
Complete the paragraph with the correct form of the verbs given.
Write your answers only in your activity notebook.
Like the other pre-Spanish Filipinos, agriculture was the ancient Manobo’s main source of
Livelihood. He (1) decide on the locations of his field and (2) make friends with the spirits of the forest
by giving an offering of betel nut. Then, he (3) begin to work without delay. He (4) cut the underbush
and small trees and fell the big trees. When the branches and leaves (5) become dry, he (6) burn the
entire field. His relatives and friends (7) help him. He (8) perform a religious ceremony. To have a
bountiful harvest, he (9) say a prayer to “Taphagan” the “diwata” who (10) guard the troops. Then, he
(11) sprinkle the seeds to be planted with the blood of a white chicken or pig. The men (12) punch
holes in the ground with the pointed sticks. Right behind them the women (13) drop the seeds into
holes and (14) cover them with soil with their feet.

V. ASSIGNMENT
A. Look for five regular verbs and use their past tense in a sentence.
B. Look for five irregular verbs and use their past tense in a sentence.
