Yoshihiro Nyuui (1906 (Meiji 39) -1975 (Showa 50) was a high-ranking younger brother of Japanese kendo
artist Sasaburo Takano (Shudo Gakuin), and was awarded the 10th Dan of Kendo by Takano.
Career
Born in Hanawa Village, Kazuno District, Akita Prefecture (currently Hanawa, Kazuno City). He moved to
Tokyo in 1920 (Taisho 9) and entered Sasaburo Takano's Dojo Shudo Gakuin at the age of 14. He learns the
Nakanishi school one-sword style.
Around 1922 (Taisho 11), he escaped from the monastic school and embarked on a journey of training as a
single warrior. He travels around the country and even land in Manchuria. Then he returns to Shudo Gakuin. He
is counted as one of the three crows of Shudo Gakuin and takes the nickname of "white demon".
In 1929 (Showa 4), at the recommendation of Takano, he became a second high school kendo instructor in
Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture at the age of 22. He also teaches at Ikuei Junior High School, Kogotano
Agricultural and Forestry High School, and Tohoku Imperial University. His leadership is highly evaluated, and
his name roars all over the country as "there is a nyui in Tohoku."
After World War II, he opened a dojo in Sendai City. Kendo members from Kogotano Norin High School, Ikuei
High School, Tohoku High School, Iinogawa High School, Sagae High School, etc. visited this dojo and
received guidance from Nyuui. His student, Masashi Chiba, won the All Japan Kendo Championship three times.
His nephew Koichi Tomokawa also served as a Kendo instructor at the Metropolitan Police Department.
Dan title
In 1936 (Showa 11), he was awarded the Kendo teacher's degree by the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai.
In 1949 (Showa 24), Kendo 10th Dan was awarded by Sasaburo Takano.
Episode:
[Physical constitution and strength]
He used a 800g bamboo sword, which is heavier than a normal bamboo sword (about 500g), because he has a
large physique like a sumo wrestler and is strong. He sometimes used a serious bamboo sword that weighs nearly
1 kg. He shook a heavy swing bar 300-1000 times each morning. His disciple shook his stick about 10 times, and
the next day he couldn't turn his head and took a break from training. Although the impact seems to be light, it is
actually powerful, and some people put shock-absorbing padding under their hands. When he was young, he
focused on practicing thrusting, pushing up his opponent and throwing his feet away. In 1939 (Showa 14), when
he played against Shigezaburo Miyazaki, who was known as a large swordfighter, he used a stab technique to fly
Miyazaki's face into the air and roll it into the corner of the dojo. Miyazaki is said to have been stunned. Trial
slash
In the trial sword of the Japanese sword, three makiwara were slashed together in one horizontal character.
Conflict with Yushinkan
When he went to the Dojo Yushinkan of Nakayama Hakudo to practice, he repeatedly stabbed Nakayama into
the corner of the dojo. After this, the notoriety that "Nyui is a polite violent person" was heard, and the match
that was clearly won by a malicious referee was also lost. His teacher, Sasaburo Takano, scolded him, "Because
you are violent, you will be defeated by the winning match without the umpire's compassion." No armor
When he went to another dojo to practice, he didn't have a torso and top-left that was the right size for him, so he
attended the lesson without a torso and top-left. It is said that all his torso was sealed with a bamboo sword. He
was also a dual wield dual wield player and actively taught dual wield. At Second High School, there have
always been several players who take two swords every year since Nyui took office as a teacher. Teruo Kayaba,
who attended the second high school training while working for the Miyagi Prefectural Police Department, won
the runner-up in the 1940 (Showa 15) viewing game with the dual wield that was taught by Nyui.
Criticism of sports kendo
After the war, he severely criticized Kendo, which has become a safe sport. It is said that kendo that prohibits
ramming and foot-paying is nothing more than "kendo performed by women and girls" and "touching a bamboo
sword." You won't die if you put your foot on it, so instead of banning it, the referee should stop it, and even if
you put your foot on it, you will fall.
