Unity
According to the Webster’s Dictionary unity is oneness and oneness is the following:
the quality or state or fact of being one: as
a : singleness
b : integrity, wholeness
c : harmony
d : sameness, identity
e : unity, union
Unity is a subject that has been widely spoken. Everyone is his life time has longed and desired
for unity. In fact unity is a vital element in human beings, for life without it would be impossible to
bear.
Unity is not just getting together to accomplish something, nor is it only harmony and sameness in
thought and action. Like other ideal characteristics human beings come short of it; because unity
is a characteristic of God and therefore is God the only source to obtain it. Since naturally man
lacks unity, it’s very hard for him to understand its real meaning. So in short unity is God, for He
is one.
Since unity is a part of God, without Him it’s impossible to understand His nature. Salvation is
based on unity, for without unity with its source it’s impossible to obtain it.
God is one, yet we can be one with God, just as Jesus and His Father are one (John 10:30). This
means that the oneness of God doesn’t only mean that He is one same person. Jesus’ prayer
was that we could be one just as His Father and Him are one (John 17:21).
God’s oneness is the sameness of nature and the harmony of personalities. Unity is exclusively
obtained by fusing our lives with God’s. God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one, not
because once, back in eternity they decided to become one, but because it has always existed
and it’s a part of their character.
“Christ, the Word, the only begotten of God, was one with the eternal Father,--one in nature, in
character, in purpose,--the only being that could enter into all the counsels and purposes of God.
"His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The
Prince of peace" (Isa. 9:6). His "goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting" (Micah
5:2).-- Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 34.
That means that even though they have the faculty to think, act and feel by themselves,
separated from each other, whatever one thinks is what the other was thinking; whatever one
feels is exactly what the other is feeling and whatever one does, is the will from the other one.
God is light (1 John 1:5), He hates sin for it’s the opposite of goodness, therefore whatever one
thinks, acts and feels is good, is perfect, uncontaminated from unselfishness, pride, sin.
Getting to know one, is like getting to know the other one. “Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us
the Father, and it sufficeth. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you and yhet
hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest
thou then, Show us the Father?” John 14:8,9. This is even applied to likeness and appearance
“who is the image of the invisible God the firstborn of every creature:” Col. 1:15. “…lest the light
of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” 2 Cor. 4:4
Wherever one is, the others will undoubted be present. When the environment, conditions and
welcoming desire is the proper one, He (plural form) will be present.
Whatever One can do, the others will also be able to do. God both as creator and savior, which
are also characteristics of Jesus. The Old Testament presents the pre incarnation of Jesus in
different ways, as present in the creation, and being the Creator (Gen. 1:26), Terminator (Gen.
19:24), Angel of the Lord (Gen. 22:11-16; 31:11-13; Ex. 3:2-4; etc.) As the Captain of the Armies
of God (Joshua 5:14-15)
The oneness and unity is so great that it actually appears to be the presence of One person, and
the way they introduce themselves to humanity, looks like one same person with 3 different
manifestations.
Once again, in order to study unity, one has to come to its source and that is to study the Deity.
It’s not like One is dependant to the other, that one is not able to do things by its own, or like one
has to say something in order not to brake any kind of unity agreement among them. Whatever
they say, act, think or feel is part of themselves, their nature itself and their likeness is such that
by nature the feelings of One are the feelings of the other One, likewise their thoughts, actions
and will.
This is the true meaning of unity. Just as the definition of love is God, so is unity God and God is
unity, for only in Him unity is found and founded.
When God created Adam, He created him in His image, in His likeness, sharing the perfect
nature of God. Unity was a part of his nature for he was one with God. Since unity, love and
perfection ruled the paradise, eternal bliss was the result of the life there.
Unity among human beings should exist as long as they were united with God.
Unity was humanized in marriage and materialized in sex. Had they remained faithful to God, the
unity, love and happiness would have been forever. They would have become the mirror-
reflection of God in every sense. The oneness of God was to be theirs and the unity of God
would have been reflected in the couple.
After the fall, since man has come short of the glory of God, he lacks unity and in order for him to
find it, he needs to come back to God.
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they
shall be one flesh” Gen. 2:24
This text has become a subject of study and research. Unity in marriage and the meaning of the
words of God has always questioned many people.
A marriage without God is a place where God’s unity does not exist; so what keeps people
together in the majority of the cases is convenience, passion, attraction, children, money, society,
morality, similarity in personalities, etc, or the trade of repression of contrary feelings to obtain
something similar to unity.
Unity in the church, among brethren is seen in many cases as something like this. It’s believed to
be the great effort to control my feelings what makes someone be able to live in harmony with his
brother while in many cases it’s forgotten that the closer we, each one of us, come to God, the
more we come closer to each other.
This same principle is applied to the families. The only factor which can bring families together
and make them one is not the financial interests, but the presence of the oneness of God. The
way to fight gossips, quarrels and discords both in the church and in the families is the unceasing
search for God.
Unity is then first obtained individually when we join to the source and then it becomes collective
as a result of the first one, not the other way around.
Many aspects in the “materialized unity” -as I have named sex in this article,- are overlooked by
the society and the youth nowadays.
Sex was created to be a part of marriage; as the consummation of the love of two people after
they had become one with God. Seth then, would be the physical link to make them “one flesh”,
so that they could not only achieve unity of soul but also similarity and likeness in the physical
level. Before sin, the purpose of sex was to make them one flesh, up to a point of likeness in
every sense, just as God is one. After the fall, there are but pale changes we see in a couple
which up to a point helps us see what God wanted for a married couple.
Since sex is the link which makes two people “one flesh”, it’s through sex that genetical
information is interchanged to achieve that same goal.
When a couple is united with God, the information shared in an intercourse is blessed by God
and in a way it becomes a way to have the oneness of God manifested in them.
The information shared in the act, is part of themselves, part of their personality; which in this way
and by a relationship with God will bring the real unity in a couple making them “one flesh”. They
will as a result of many years of marriage look alike physically and as well as in their
personalities. The unity is such that for instance in some cases of pregnancy and delivery both of
the spouses share the pain, symptoms and craves.
On the other hand when sex is used outside wedlock, besides it doesn’t have God’s blessings, it
originates the bad traits of personality to be shared as well. If someone is controlled or
possessed by Satan, or if he has sins-doorways by which Satan controls him, in the moment of
intercourse they will be shared with the other spouse, and since this relationship doesn’t have the
blessing and protection of God, both of them will be equally contaminated.
The result of an active sexual life with different partners before or during marriage is the loss of
personality, the compilation of other people’s personalities, sins-doorways, sentimental instability,
etc.
Satan is the author of disunion, so he has led men to profane the sacred principle of marriage to
destroy human lives.
With this we conclude that premarital sexual relationships will create in the young person a
doorway by which Satan will weakens him in this area making him unable to be committed to one
partner, or unable to control his passions; bringing him instability in his emotional life.
Sex connects two people, and therefore contaminates them when it is not done within wedlock.
“Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of
Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What? Know ye not that he which
is joined to an harlot is one body? For two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto
the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he
that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body” 1 Cor. 6:15-18
Unity with God is then spiritual and in the marriage is physical. Unity with God will bring unity in
the church and the family.
When one partner is a believer and the other not, the shared information in intercourse will be for
good and a blessing if the believer is united with God. (1 Cor. 7:12-16) So when the believer is
dependant upon God he will influence his partner by sharing good information in intercourse, and
this, together with the Holy Spirit and the behavior of the believer, the unbeliever will come to
conversion.
“For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness” 1 Thess. 4:7
God calls us to be pure. Let’s not trade a moment of pleasure for the consequences that this will
bring in our sentimental and spiritual life.
The solution for this sin is the same one: Jesus Messiah, to confess those sins and command
Satan to leave from our life.
As a conclusion, unity is only found in Jesus, when we unite ourselves with Him, there will be
unity in our families, church and society.
“If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any
fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassions, then make my joy complete by
being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of
selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of
you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude
should be the same as that of Christ Jesus” Philippians 2:1-5 (NIV)
